Need help sourcing some shou

Hi guys, long term tea addict and new to steepster. I’m getting more heavily into shou these days and would really appreciate some help sourcing a couple of teas.

The first is one that I tried recently at a tea tasting and really enjoyed, I was told it was a 2007 Menghai Adorned in Red. I can’t seem to find any vendor that sells this though.

The other one that I have been recommended by someone who has a similar taste in tea is the 2008 Menghai Song of Chi. DTH sells this on ebay but I would ideally like to find a vendor to order a sample from before getting a cake.

Any ideas on where to check would be greatly appreciated!

PS: Very excited to have found steepster (and /r/tea on reddit), I’ve never really had a tea community to engage in before so it is pretty refreshing.

If you are interested and can give me some time to find it I have a tong and a half of the 2008 version of that cake. I got it from Tuocha Tea and I should be able to match their price plus shipping. They don’t call it Adorned in Red though but if you look up the 2008 Menghai Hong Zhuang you will notice it is the same wrapper.

Alternately if you want my all time favorite tea cake I don’t have it in sale quantities but maybe should buy a tong, it’s the 2008 Menghai Song of Chi Tse from Berylleb King Tea on Ebay. Berylleb sells sample sizes. Also available from Yunnan Sourcing but they call it something else. You may also find the 2007 of that cake if you look to vendors selling it under another name. I know Puerhshop sells a year of it I don’t remember which year.

I have the one from Tuocha tea as well. I got it when Allan got a tong. I will vouch for Berylleb as well. I think YS calls it something else. I think they are out of stock on it on the China site.
Berylleb’s is here,

I don’t think they do samples on it but you could email them and see if they will accommodate a sampling.

Hi Allank and mrmpopar, thanks for the input.

Allank: I am in no rush and that would be great as long as shipping isn’t too prohibitive, I’m in Norway. I am following you, so feel free to send me a message whenever you get the chance to look for it.

I’ll write to both Berylleb and DTH on ebay to see if they will do a sample of the Song of Chi Tse, thank you.

I thought you were in the USA to be honest. Shipping within the USA I could fit it in a plat rate envelop for about $6.50. To Norway I am sure the shipping would be closer to $20 or even higher. The USPS charges a small fortune for international shipping. Then there is the problem that the cheapest price won’t include tracking. With tracking it is another ten or fifteen dollars. If I had realized you were in Norway I probably wouldn’t have offered because I know how expensive the shipping is. It would be truthfully be cheaper to get it from Tuocha Tea. Shipping from China is a lot less than shipping from the USA.

One cake to Norway from ys.com would be $12.19 by e-packet (Express Small Parcel), 2 cakes $17.54, 3 cakes $22.89

No worries Alan, and yes you’re right shipping from the US doesn’t make sense. I just didn’t want to outright reject your incredibly generous offer to help out :)

@Yunnan Sourcing I am planning an order from you guys anyway and will likely order the 2008 Menghai Qi Zi Zhi Ge (Song of Chi Tse) from you. However the cake AllanK is talking about now is the 2008 Menghai Hong Zhuang (Adorned in Red/Red makeup) which as far as I know, you don’t stock.

Thanks everyone!

@Sqt – let me check tonight and see if we can offer it for a competitive price.

Yunnan Sourcing: thanks! Will wait to hear from you.

While if you can get it from Yunnan Sourcing they are my favorite source for puerh and in my opinion the most reliable, Tuocha Tea is also good. They have excellent prices and they sell the real deal Dayi for competitive prices. I believe their website is www.tuochatea.com if I am not mistaken.

New to Steepster and new to Puer tea. Got a question. How do you sort out a source like Berylleb and other ebay sellers like care4Health413, Idllu, shopping.outlets, etc. Are some known for selling faked product and others known as honest tea dealers? Is there a place I can go and see who the honest ones are?

I am new to all online tea communities and not that knowledgeable about puerh either. I’ve been able to get a sense for what vendors are reliable just by reading discussions here, on teachat and /r/tea on reddit.

You can search by vendor on steepster as well, it mostly works.

For puerh these would be some good places to start:
Yunnan sourcing
Essence of Tea
White2tea
Crimson Lotus Tea
Berylleb on ebay.
This is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list, there are a lot of other good vendors out there too.

I will back all those on that list. Ys has been good to a lot of us on here. There are some smaller ones too. Bitterleaf and WhatCha have some decent stuff too.

I am in process of selling the grandkids….. anyone need a couple?

@mrmopar – aren’t kids a money pit? can they farm?

mrmopar said

They are good at digging. Maybe mowing but the grandson can do a bang up Gong Fu session for you. Explaining the Factories, shapes and the numeric coding whilst he prepares your cup.

@mrmopar I bet he could be the next Da Shan…

Yes, Scott was kind enough to source this for me. I’ve just placed my first order and thus far, the service from Yunnan Sourcing has been excellent and has exceeded my expectations.

@Sqt thanks for the opportunity. I hope the shipping will be fast and smooth. ;-)

Can someone tell me what “tippy ripe” means? It’s in the description of this tea.

High ratio of leaf tips/buds to larger leaves. You can see it as more gold/orange color as compared to brown.

Got it! Thanks iperez.

Sorry off topic – did I need to do something with my YS account when they moved to the new website. I can’t log in and I can’t reset my password – just wondering if I should have done something that I haven’t?

please email me directly.
