Your favorite malty tea?

I haven’t been able to find a decent Assam in ages. Anyone have a favorite malty tea available in the US?

I like to drink a pot of black tea when I wake up, and then I make various green and white teas throughout the day. For my morning cuppa, bonus points for affordability. I also only steep the black leaves once, since I’m often running out the door.

I often find that Yunnan black teas are malty. Yunnan Sourcing carries plenty although I don’t have a specific recommendation from there. If you email Scott I am sure he can tell you which ones are malty. They have two websites. www.yunnansourcing.com and www.yunnansourcing.us the .com site ships from China the .US site ships from Oregon.

I’ll second Alan on the Yunnan blacks. In my experience, the golden needle or pure bud teas are less malty than the cheaper Yunnan blacks, which works out well in terms of affordability.

Thirding Yunnan blacks. I usually prefer the kind of malt and smoothness of Yunnan blacks over Assam blacks.

Golden Monkey (Bai Lin Gong Fu) from Yunnan Sourcing. That’s a tasty tea that will have the maltiness you’re looking for, I think.

Yes! It’s malty and packs a serious caffeine kick. I reach for matcha or this when I need something strong to wake me up in the morning.

The matcha I have had, which is not particularly good quality, seems to have much less caffeine in it than my usual black tea, I would have guessed it was low in caffeine, because I still get caffeine headaches when I drink it.

I have a good one here. I think, though, that if you want to really pull the full flavour of Assam out, that you will need milk or to drink with yoghurt. (Yes, I drink it black too.)

As one who prefers Indian tea, I believe Organic Assam from Harney & Sons is superb. It’s malty with wonderful honey and caramel sweetness. Also, it’s very affordable. Very fast shipping too!

Verdant’s Laoshan Black, especially the spring harvests, are ridiculously malty and delicious, and have a very nice chocolate flavor.

Just tried Yunnan Sourcing’s 2017 Spring Assamica Gold Needle; it’s very malty and delicious, medium bodied, chocolaty and yam-y. Tastes almost like chocolate chip cookies.
