Black Tea From Sri Lanka

Hey everyone,

We’re a new company just founded in January 2017 located in Vancouver, Canada. We are focused on delivering Black Tea from Sri Lanka from the growers. Since our founding group is half Sri Lankan and half Canadian we have strong roots and people on the ground in Sri Lanka to make sure quality is exceptional.

I was curious if anyone has a specific type of Black Tea that they love? At least, based on analytics, there is a way bigger audience of people who drink Green Tea then there are of people who drink Black Tea. This is why we’re reaching out to find all those Black tea lovers out there and see what really makes you guys look forward to that next cup.

You can find us online at https://www.alakaban.com/ but we’re also here to chat anything tea.

Well Ive just started getting into tea from Sri Lanka/Ceylon and so far Lumbini estate is my favorite.

Im not a huge fan of Fannings or CTC , I much prefer Bop, or OP.

I find the ctc and fannings, get bitter too easily, and it can overpower the other subtler flavors.

That’s great to hear, so much to explore in the world of Ceylon tea if you’re just getting started or even for a seasoned veteran. So far our tea comes from estates in the Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Dimbula, and Kandy areas. There’s also tons of various grades you can try. Lumbini tea actually comes from a place in central Sri Lanka located between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. A fantastic area where some of the best tea is grown in Sri Lanka.

Yeah im looking forward to trying tea from Nuwara and Kandy. Ive had Dimbula and found it quite good. Sorry to say Im not familiar with Hatton.

It’s quite close to Nuwara Eliya, a little bit more West but still fits into that prime central Sri Lanka growing zone.

Its a high altitude tea then?

Alakaban said

Yeah exactly, similar elevation to Dimbula.

It’s always great to see new Vancouver tea companies. Will you be showing at the Vancouver Tea Festival this year?

We are hoping to be! Investigating getting a booth at the moment.

It almost goes without saying but Sri Lanka produces other tea styles than black teas too, although most must be black, and probably most made are CTC by quite a margin. Unless I’m remembering wrong I tried an interesting version of Peony / Bai Mu Dan style tea from the Nuwara Eliya area, but I think silver needle and golden needle style teas are more common. The black teas are nice too though, and more typical.

Yeah you’re right, Sri Lanka does have a variety of different Teas but the vast majority of tea made there is black tea. We do have some silver tipped and golden tipped teas coming to our store soon, but they one of if not the most expensive types of tea you can find in Sri Lanka due to how rare they are.

If you find the right grower you can get Red Tea and Green Tea as well. Something we’ve definitely been looking into.
