Teavana is closing! Mahalo Tea and DAVIDs Tea planning expansion

Starbucks on Thursday said it will close all 379 Teavana tea stores worldwide. (source: http://fortune.com/2017/07/27/starbucks-closing-teavana-stores/)

Starbucks cited that the mall-based chain’s “underperformance was likely to continue.” Starbucks, which will continue to sell Teavana tea at its namesake stores, bought the chain for $620 million in 2012, hoping it could have the same success with loose-leaf as it did with coffee.

With Teavana leaving its mall-store locations, two tea business are planning to expand their operations including Mahalo Tea and DAVIDs Tea.

Poised for growth, Mahalo Tea over the past year has been increasing its share and is setting on increasing its footprint with Teavana closure. This Hawaiian themed online loose leaf tea retailer boasts an excellent selection of Black Tea, Green Teas, Oolong Teas, and Rooibos Teas and creating custom blends by mixing fruit directly from Hawaii with Tea from all over the world to create amazing blends of tea. Mahalo Tea is also a strategic partner of Amazon by delivering 2 day shipping optimizing delivery and delighting customers.

DAVIDs Tea is also planning further expansion into the US from its widely popular base in Canadian markets where it was founded. DAVIDs Tea is widely popular with its iconic design and flavors currently located in some US based malls including Mall of America, Oakridge Mall, and the Liberty Center. And with Teavana vacating mall across the United States DAVIDs Tea and Mahalo Tea will be expanding further into those markets.

Someone needs to tell Mahalo to stop giving their teas a numerical rating of 100 on every review! Tea companies generally withhold ratings on here, because who really believes a tea company reviewing their own goods and giving every single one a 100?

Agreed honestly I would not buy from them because of this.

Not sad to see Teavana go but the expansion of DAVIDs Tea and Mahalo doesn’t excite me either. I wish there was a tea shop that I actually would want to visit local to me, but at least I can be thankful for the great online vendors out there!

Agreed. Starbucks already controls enough of the world. But what’s wrong with David’s Tea? I know it’s overpriced, but I find their tea selection nice and they let you bring in your own tins (eco-friendly). I really like their Golden Monkey and their Nepal Black has a unique and enjoyable earthy flavor.

I don’t have anything against either company, but I’ve found that I tend to not like the tea from places that do a lot of blends. I haven’t tried Mahalo, but I haven’t really liked anything from DAVIDs that I’ve had, blended or straight. That’s not to say that their tea is bad, just that it may not be what appeals to my palate. :3

Teavana was what got me into loose leaf tea in the first place, but I find their sales tactics too pushy. I’m not really sad to see them go. I like DT and I’m hoping they’ll move into the vacant Teavana store in my area :)

I would love to see a Davids Tea in Texas. Hopefully they’ll expand further south in the US

I just had my first batch of Mahalo Tea and it was so good. I bought their Paradise Passion Fruit and their Peach Serenity and it was delicious! Hope to see Mahalo Tea come to my location but until I’m happy buying from them online

Maybe Davidstea will replace the teavana stores in the mall that are set the close?

If you haven’t noticed David’s Tea isn’t doing that well either (especially in the USA).

Starbucks is just evil.

What the hell? Nooo!

I will never forgive Teavana for their hostile takeover of Specialteas several years back. This was a small family run vendor with a great selection of Chinese and Indian black teas. IIRC Teavana did a hostile takeover for one proprietary type of flavored tea and kicked the rest to the curb. I say good riddance. I remember going to the Specialteas site and being redirected to the Teavana site (which had a horrible selection) . Specialteas had 1 Fujian black called Emperors red that was just amazing. Still haven’t been able to find anything quite like it. None of the monkey, Keemun, Mao Feng etc teas match its chocolate and wine notes.

I used to buy a tea called Emperor’s Red from Premium Steap and a few years ago it became unavailable. There was nothing else like it, and I miss it terribly. I wonder if it was the same tea?

Hmm could be. Everyone who’s had that tea knows what I’m talking about. I’ve had a few red monkeys that were fairly close but not quite the same.
