What Drives You To Drink?

It sounds like a silly New Age hippy song-and-dance, but in general I find tea drinking to be very meditative, almost spiritual in many ways. I like the quote “Tea is drunk to forget the din of the world” (Tien Yiheng)…it seems to fit.

I think it fits. Hippy-ish or not. It seems to be a good path to finding a happy place, however brief it may be.

Today, it is boredom and the fact that I left DAVIDs with another ten 10g sample packages!

Does it mean the social networking in its wrong use? Communication for fun and for advertisement as well.

Heh. Well, this question brings up a story.

This past January we had an ice storm where I live. A bad ice storm. My driveway and all the streets were coated. I drive a little Honda and there was no way in heck I could get out. I was stuck at home for 5 days. I ran out of my usual obsession, Diet Coke, around about the second day.

I’ve never been a coffee drinker — just never acquired the taste, despite the fact I used to make my mother’s coffee when I was a kid. But I usually kept a box of cheap ice tea teabags and at least one box of hot tea bags just on general principles, this being the South where ice tea is king. Usually the hot tea was Bigelow’s Constant Comment or a green tea with mint in it. So that was all I had left to drink during the ice storm. For some reason it gained in appeal the more I drank it.

A month later I managed to get the flu, and was again home for 5 days. This time, tea was the only thing I could stomach during the fever, and this time I had Twinings Orange Pekoe and some Irish Breakfast. I alternated that with my Theraflu and pretty much lived on it while I was sick.

After I got well, I got an electric kettle and started mail-ordering from Teavana.

About a month ago I got a Panasonic hot water dispenser. I figure if you spend over $50 to get a machine that will heat water to certain temperatures, you’re serious about your tea.

What drives me to drink? Tea is like liquid meditation. I literally can’t be stressed or in a bad mood while drinking tea. It’s like flipping a switch. No matter what mood I’m in, it calms me down.

What drives me to drink?

Being unemployed or the act of looking for employment drives me to drink. But truth be known, I was born a drinker of teas. It is all I can remember, green tea and more some. Of late it has been Oolong (Foojoy or Vintage Wulong); I begin my day with them and end the day with a green tea when not sampling some specialty brand samplers.

A household with no income coming in is driving me to drink as well; my slowness in all things; my perspective which is not correctly aligned to those of normal folks is driving me to drink. I have become obsessed with tea drinking and this is driving me to drink.

I cannot figure out what it is anymore. I use to drink tea all day long, but some months back this tea journey leaves me wanting tea.

Know of the title: Diary of a mad…., well t’is the dowry of mad tea drinker’s madness unleashing.

I should turn myself in since it is this excuse keeping me from employment/employers…etc. a paycheck. I am in serious trouble and can clearly see the wreck before mine eyes. I am sick I tell you.

Dear seule771, just recently I lost my job and I thought yay, now I’ll have the time to drink all that fabulous tea I own :)

You know what drives me to drink (tea)? 52Teas, and specifically Frank, who just feels the need to release teas whether or not I can afford to buy them. It just… drives me to drink, I tell you.

Yeah, kind of in agreement. Where does he get his juice; weekly or is it monthly tea mixing. He seems like a nice guy, but the thought does drive me to want to drink not his tea; just that plain old green store brand tea.

I love his tea… and the thought of plain old green store brand tea makes my stomach tie up in knots. Yeah, I guess I’m a tea snob. He is always creating the most unusual and wonderful flavored teas. I think I’ve been disappointed by only one or two of them in the last couple years since I’ve begun trying his teas.

I drink tea about three times a day. At work when taking a break, after work to slow down, and in the evening in a relaxed atmosphere at home. Prepairing tea and drinking it is always a special time for me.

Work definitely drives me to drink. I’m still considered “in training”, despite it being minimum wage and despite my being there for a month and a half now. This means that any time there’s a lull in the number of patients walking in, instead of being able to relax for a second and do recalls, I have to learn or practice something new. It’s crazy-making, I tell ya! Even when I am fully trained, there is no such thing as downtime at my job, which can wear on you after a while.

So I drink tea. Yesterday I showed up for my small shift (5 hours) with two travel mugs full of tea. Cracked my coworker up. Today I’m doing the same, plus taking tea with me so I can make more. When I’m really reaching a breaking point, when things start to slow down, I escape and run around the corner to DavidsTea and order something that cannot be messed up >.>, like Jungle Ju Ju or any of the rooibos or herbals that don’t have hibiscus. It gives me a chance to get out of the office, talk to someone familiar about something I love, and decompress. The girls at my local DavidsTea are always friendly, willing to chat while my tea is being made, and they all know me on sight by now. It’s definitely a mood booster when coming from a job when everything done wrong is highlighted and everything done right is never mentioned. Apparently I’m farther along in my training that the two girls hired two weeks before me, but the person who has been in charge of my training had me feeling like I was so far behind they were considering letting me go. Grrrr.

Anywa, cleaning also drives me to drink. Let me explain. Whenever I’m unloading and reloading the dishwasher, I start to make a cup of tea and when I’m done with my chore, the tea is done as well. Same thing with cleaning the kitchen. If I do both things at once, then the chores go by so much faster and at the end, I have a hot cuppa tea to enjoy!

When I’m sick and stressed, I go to tea. One of the reasons I love a local shop here in Atlanta so much happened when I was sick. I had nothing that I felt could be soothing enough for my throat, so I headed there, and was presented with a pot of lemon mint rooibos. Now that’s an awesome prescription. Anytime I’m sick, that’s my go to tea.

I’ve been going through a bunch of wonderful stuff the past couple of weeks, and pretty much the only reason to get up is to make tea. When I was told my stupid back pain from a car accident needed physical therapy, I came home and had tea before I had more meds. I just had this “I really need tea” reaction. Every time I read an email from this teaching instructor and his inability to have a heart, it’s time for a pot.

I also love to drink to share. I turned my mom onto 52teas’ Pancake Breakfast after one sip. She is entirely a coffee drinker, but that one sip stayed with her all yesterday that she asked me to get her some next time it’s available.
