New to puerh and just wanted to say hello

I first tried puerh about 10 years ago with a sample of both sheng and shou. Didn’t care for either. About 2 months ago I got both of them out and tried them again. Apparently my palate has changed in the intervening decade as I thought they were great. Now I need to learn more and get some more of each. I know that this is a slippery slope and tea tuition can come at a high price. I am going to use what I learn here hopefully to avoid mistakes as well as I can. I’ll be posting some notes as I progress on this journey. I have a couple of cakes coming and I look forward to picking your brains for information. I will probably be looking primarily at young drinkable shengs and shou as at 67 years of age I don’t have 2 or 3 decades to wait for something to age. Hopefully at some point I can also find some really good aged sheng at a somewhat reasonable price. So hello from Eastern Tennessee.

Hello, there is no doubt that aged puerh tastes better, well, also more expensive lol

Hi TnDave. 10 years is a long time between tastings. :) Glad you liked them. What were the samples? What cakes did you just purchase?

Thanks for the welcome. t-curious the samples of puerh that I had were the 2000 and 2003 Yong Pin Hao “WiYu Zheng Shan” and the ripe puerh was Dayi “Gong Tuo”. I did drink a lot of tea during those 10 years. Lots of oolongs, Golden Needle, Darjeelings and Keemun.

Okay. Yesterday I received a cake of Monocle Boss from Mei Leaf. I am waiting for shipment of several from Crimson Lotus as follows:
A cake of “Special Cake” sheng, a cake of 2000 “Old Warrior” shou, a sample of “Black Gold” shou, and a cake of 2005 Changtai “Top of the Clouds” sheng. That should at least give me a start into what this is all about.

Crimson Lotus is a great place to start. Sometimes people try to start off exploring puer with say ebay or their local chinatown, and that rarely ends well…

I added a few tasting notes and reviews on the puerhs I have had thus far. I have a lot of experience reviewing whiskies and cigars but absolutely none regarding teas so please take my notes with a grain of salt. My notes will be an honest attempt to identify the flavors I taste and my rating score at this point is nothing more than some scale of how much I enjoyed the tea.

You will see some similarities between the two. Especially some of the scotches you have drank.
