Is resting puerh after shipment advised?

I have had a few cakes delivered in the last few days with some others yet to come. Should I let the cakes rest for a while and if so for how long? Thanks for helping a puerh novice here.

Well it depends on how much you ordered. From my research breaking off a piece of a cake to taste immediately does the tea still left no harm. But you might not get the full effect of the brew. But then again it is interesting to taste the difference between the first day, 2 weeks later, 2 months later. I happen to personally use this method when Im not overly backed up on tea tasting… umm okay I usually am overly backed up :)

Sound advice. I check for smokiness when it arrives and then into storage. Always better when the jet lag wears off.

So I will let it rest for a couple of weeks.

I think it will be a better experience. Another trick is after you rinse a tea give it ten minutes or so for the water to penetrate the leaf. If you weigh before and after the rinse you will find a lot of times the tea will absorb almost its own weight of water.

Depends on who sent it to me :P

Rest is advisable but psychologically difficult. At least for me. I sometimes just do one little session, just to treat myself.

This is why I only buy full shou cakes now… I can’t help but to pick at them as they’re resting and by the time I get around to them 50g is already gone!

If it’s a cake, I’m diving right in. I’ve had a couple instances where steeping upon arrival ended up being better than any subsequent sessions.

If it’s a decent sized sample, like 20 grams, I’ll often brew up 5 grams right away to see what it’s like, and then try it again a couple weeks later. Or whenever I get around to it ;)

If it’s an expensive sample or less than 20 grams I’ll wait two to four weeks before giving it a try.

Well I’ve held off for 4 days so far. The next 3 won’t be a problem as I am going up to Kentucky to visit some distilleries and local stores as I need to restock my Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon supply for cocktails.
