7542 recipe change

I’ve seen several blogs and posts on multiple sites where people report that around the year 2000, the Menghai tea factory changed its recipe and seriously lowered its quality, yet I haven’t been able to find any documented history of such a change. I’m just beginning to dabble with a few factory cakes and would like to verify this. Does anyone have any links that would shed some light on this? I know pre y2k cakes bring a fortune and new cakes can be easily had for like $25.

I don’t think much changed; there was nothing fancy in 7542 to begin with! JUst good plantation tea, although some say gushu was blended into older cakes. I think the people who pushed this rumor hard were people who had older tea to sell. :)

That’s what i was thinking…those who reported the recipe being ruined were vendors. Kinda wild how the pre y2k stuff sells for more than a lot of aged gushu I’ve seen…

It’s all about demand! Older cakes and gushu are widely faked too of course. Big money is spent on fakes of both every year!
