2018: How much will you spend on tea this year?

I hate to put a number down because I’ve been blowing past my limits. I hope to spend less than $1,000, but more importantly, buy less than 2 kg of tea. I want to move up the quality ladder as I have tons of daily drinkers.

I spent about $1000 in both 2016 and 2017. I’m planning on keeping it at that level – well hopefully less – as my stash is out of control. I’d like to drink up my less liked teas and focus on the ones I really love.

I’m planning on keeping the W2T club at least for this year ($360) so I’m left with $640.

Jan – Mar ~$20
Little Woods $20

Apr $67
White2Tea $67

June $5
David’s $5

July $14
Little Woods $14

Aug
Floating Leaves $52
Little Woods $32

Oct
Crimson Lotus $91

Nov
Bitterleaf $119
Crimson Lotus $48 (silver teacup) I totally caved on buying this but I’ve been thinking about it for at least 6 months. No other BF stuff so far. :)

Total: $468

I think I’m under budget. :) Overall total: $828

My 2017 spending totaled a whooping $1,857.95, which is nuts. In 2018 I am returning to school and with the debt that comes with that, I have to be saving which means my budget has to be a whole lot less. Thankfully I have enough tea to last a while.

January: $159.07
A Quarter to Tea $29.04
52 Teas $99.49
Necessiteas ($15.15) – reimbursed
52 Teas ($5.14)
Finum Filters $20.31
Sips By $30.52

February: $147.89
A Quarter to Tea $28.44
DAVIDsTEA (mugs) $88.14
Sips By $31.31

March: $61.59
A Quarter to Tea $29.75
Sips By $31.84

April: $61.51
A Quarter to Tea $29.77
Sips By $31.74

I’ve also spent about $150 at DAVIDsTEA using gift cards I got for my birthday

May: $83.99
A Quarter to Tea $29.79
DAVIDsTEA (*does this count if I was basically buying gifts/tea for other people?) $54.20
*I’ve also spent another $50 at DAVIDsTEA but using a gift card

June: $30.00
A Quarter to Tea $30.00

July: $43.19
52 Teas $43.19

October: $60.70
DAVIDsTEA $60.70

November: $70.00
DAVIDsTEA $70.00

December: $0

TOTAL: $717.91

Joint purchases ftw, splitting teas!

I didn’t keep track last year… but am terrified of knowing the total if I had. Eep!

I like the idea of setting a limit. I’m also terrified I’ll quickly be unable to keep to it…

I thought $600 for the year sounded reasonable ($50 a month) but I’ve already spent $126.54 this month. >_< I’m not very good at this…

I have an absolutely tiny apartment that simply doesn’t have the space for a very large tea collection, so hopefully my ever growing need for more tea storage space (seriously, I’m afraid I’ll need to move house or take out a storage unit at this point) will slow me down for a while.

Hear ya.

2016: $2000 USD
2017: $800 USD
2018: $200-500 USD.

I honestly have enough (some may say, “There’s no such thing”), so the budget is down to a minimal amount this year. We shall see how I can prevent the temptation from setting it. ;)

It’s about quality, not quantity this year, too! The range given may be between one or two cakes….

My official tea budget is $1000 for the year, plus the White2Tea tea club, which adds another $360. However, I’m also tentatively planning on picking up a tong of at least decent puerh (just bought a house, so I have room to actually store it), which could run anywhere from $300 to $1000+ (probably end up being more like $500ish). I also may or may not be getting a spot award from work relatively soon, and those tend to go towards tea, since they’re extra-budgetary.

Though I didn’t keep track, I must have spent around $1,200 CAD last year, which is hard to justify given the size of my cupboard. On its own, the Eco-Cha Tea Club cost about $450 CAD. The only problem is that some of my favourite teas came in the Eco-Cha boxes, and I don’t want to miss out in 2018. However, I also have club boxes that I’ve yet to open because my stash is too large.

I need to:

1. Stop buying teas that I rarely drink but that I hope I’ll eventually develop a taste for (i.e., green tea, Wuyi oolongs).

2. Try to sell some of my superfluous stock.

3. Skip a few months of the Eco-Cha Tea Club. I tend to like Eco-Cha’s roasted and bug-bitten teas more than their greener offerings, so I’ll probably suspend my membership over the summer.

4. Postpone my search for the perfect 100 ml porcelain teapot until I have more cash.

I want to get my spending down to around $700 CAD, while still being able to try a bunch of spring and winter oolongs from Taiwan. I’m not optimistic that I can do this, but I guess we’ll see!

I just started getting into tea’s about July of last year. I’m new at this. I believe I spent a good $2000. I might not buy for another few months as I do have a good amount left. I think I’m going to aim for under $1000 for 2018.

I haven’t played this game before. I’ve been scared of the reality. I definitely did better last year then I have in previous years. Staying off Steepster helps limit the exposure to new and exciting teas. :/
I did a 52teas order of $11 on the 30th of December, but didn’t get the tea until the new year, so I feel like that should count towards my tally for this year.

January: 62.75
Tea Embassy $47.75
Whole Foods bulk section $15? Forgot to check my receipt for specifics.

March: 91.34
A Quarter To Tea $54.34
Phoenix Collection $37

April: 79.48 not counting teaware
David’s Tea $74.50, around 25 of that was teaware.
Nina’s $29.98

June: TWG $32

July: $30 at Zhi Tea

August: 125.5
41.50 AQ2T
$35ish? Bought a Mariage Freres tin and another MF tea in bulk, but didn’t get a receipt.
$49 at Lupicia

September: $125 at Bird and Blend, some of that was shipping fees.

November: 194
$50 at the tea festival
$34 David’s Tea
$48 AQ2T
$62 Fortnum & Mason

My total for the year is $740.07. :( That feels like a LOT! New goal for 2019… don’t buy any tea and drink down what I have.

haha see i put it where i actually spend it. So that when tea arrives in the new year, it’s like free tea for this year!

VariaTEA said

Yep, I’m on the same page as Sil here. Otherwise I would have a big Bluebird bill that would have me over $200 spent already.

I like the idea of starting the new year out with a clean slate and a full cupboard!
