How long does tea last?

As a new tea drinker I have aquired many amounts of tea samples. How long will tea last and how should I store it?

Depends on which type but generally speaking, if stored properly
White/Green tea- less than one year
Black tea- two to three years
Oolong- one to two years
Pu-er- very long

Store in a cool dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight- preferably with airtight containers and silica gel packets

This might not be popular, but I have a lot of flavoured teas and find they can last quite a while without a significant change in taste that I notice (I’m talking a year or two, maybe more. Haven’t had any long enough :D). Unflavoured teas I like to go through more quickly for freshness, and I try to store all my teas in tins (or at least opaque packaging) away from light, moisture, etc.

with a lot of shops, odds are high it sat in storage or shipping or inventory for longer than that. I’m sure there are teas out there that suffer after a few months, but in general you should be fine (especially if your tastes aren’t too discerning – I’m 2 years into my tea love and I still don’t notice much of a difference!)

Well I just ordered some tea from a private individual and I can tell its pretty old. There is no scent to the tea, but it still tastes really good.

If it tastes good and you enjoy it, I wouldn’t worry too much.
