Is it just me, or do teas with coconut pieces have an off-putting aroma and flavor?

I’ve only had coconut in herbal/rooibos teas, and every single one of the near dozen I’ve tried, from DavidTea’s Alpine Punch to Palais de Thes’ Oriental Garden, have an aroma and taste that to me…reminds me of literal vomit.

It’s the closest approximation that I can find.
Sometimes I won’t notice it the first couple cups into a tea tin, but it becomes very apparent the more I drink it.

Has anyone else experienced this?

To me, coconut is the ingredient in a tea that ruins the fastest. It can taste amazing when it’s fresh, but then quickly becomes rancid. I don’t like coconut in teas for this reason. BUT when I do have teas with coconut, I try to drink them down faster than blends without coconut.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Glad to know I’m not the only one. I had no idea that coconut went so rancid so quickly… even the dried kind.
That explains the vomit-like flavor and scent (it also reminds me of spoiled milk).

Yes, if you have a coconut tea, drink it down fast. Coconut is one of the few ingredients in blended tea that goes bad. And when it goes bad, it can go very bad.

I wish I had asked about this sooner!
It definitely went bad quickly. I bought my tin of Palais Des Thes Oriental Garden just this month. The best by date is set for 5/2021…and it’s already tasting pukey, despite being stored properly.

I think 2021 is stretching it for any tea. But that’s no fun that it already tastes bad.

You must be super sensitive to coconut turning bad, I think, unless they had it stored in a warehouse for a while before they sold it to you. I imagine you’re just going to have to be really careful with coconut teas from now on. Only get small amounts and drink it quickly.

If the best by date is 2021 and it’s already rancid, you might try to pursue a refund, that’s ridiculously fast if you only bought it a month ago.

Yeah, that is WAY too fast! I’d say coconut at least has a few months before the taste is off. You should try for a refund.

You two might be right. A few weeks is way too fast for something to taste so off.
I might reach out to them for a refund…or at the very least, an exchange.
As for the coconut freshness sensitivity, you may be on to something. I finally connected the dots on coconut blends being the common denominator for every tea that tasted rancid in my stash. Even the new tins. It might be my tropical islander bloodline that knows to avoid rancid coconuts.
