Favorite Tea Movie Moments
I love on Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that Arthur Dent is in need of a proper cup of tea.
Another one of my Hitchhiker’s favorites (I think it made it into the movie; maybe not verbatim):
“He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.”
That pretty much describes the Flavia machine that just arrived at work…
Another very good tea documentary is “All This In Tea”, about tea importer David Lee Hoffman. And for you film buffs, Werner Herzog randomly shows up in this one.
Speaking of film buffs, I’m surprised no one mentioned something by Mizoguchi or Ozu or any one of a thousand other Japanese/Asian films that showcase the tea ceremony. Maybe I’m in the wrong forum…lol. Or for that matter, any English “Merchant Ivory” film, anything by Jane Austen, heck, even “The King’s Speech” had some pretty great tea moments. Alice in Wonderland???
Anybody seen the 2004 Japanese film “The Taste of Tea”? It keeps popping up as a recommendation in my Netflix queue…
What about the American Classic: Caddyshack? Come on now, you remember Judge Smails chasing Danny through his mansion with a golf club after catching Danny with his niece Lacey. At some point the Judge sends a tea set crashing down into the foyer from upstairs to which an elderly female guest responds with the immortal words “that must be the tea.”
Karate Kid – probably the first time I saw anything of a Japanese Tea ceremony years and years ago!
