Tea & Books - What are you reading?

1992 Replies

Currently reading Walter Mosley’s Devil In a Blue Dress for a university class. I don’t quite know how I feel about it as of yet, but that’s been the case for most of the books in this course, I take a bit longer to establish what I’m feeling about it. Does anyone else have an opinion on it? I don’t mind spoilers.

Currently reading A Dance With Dragons. These books are so amazing kjfhaksdjf.

They are! It just takes him forever to make a new one…oh, the wait is agonizing…

I’m normally a speed-reader, but these books are nuts. I read Game of Thrones in a week after I’d seen Season 1, then I wanted to have Clash of Kings done before Season 2, so I had that done in a couple months. A Storm of Swords, though — it took me about six months to get through the first half of it (until the Red Wedding) then I literally could not put it down and finished the last half in two days. Same with A Feast for Crows. I’m trying to drag ADWD out for as long as I can… sigh.

The third one has been my favourite so far, I’m only about 200 pages into Dance with Dragons though. I’m not quite getting into it though – the key for me might be to read them all in a row. I’m now starting to read something else with it which is weird for me.

I read them all back to back, last spring/summer.

Valerie said

Uniquity: Same with me; I’m about 100 pages in and it’s a bit slow to start. It’s also weird because AFFK was all one set of characters and now we’re back to the other half, and I’m just finding it hard to remember details from ASOS.

:D I’m nearly done a Game of Thrones – I can’t wait to read the others ones, although I’ll have to take a break to dive into Anna Karanina. I’m reading along with Leigh Butler over at Tor: http://www.tor.com/features/series/a-read-of-ice-and-fire. I like being able to go back and forth between what I read and compare my thoughts to someone else who hasn’t been spoiled with what happens. :D (Also, she is funny as hell).

I’m reading Anna Karanina with the new steepster book club.

Such a great book! Is this the goodreads book club?

No silly, just a bunch of steepsterites reading the book together & drinking teas that we think will go with it. As I recall, you are one of us… :)

Em said

Yay! I started it too. But I have to take a break to read a few things that I have been waiting for on hold at the library.

Valerie said

I’m a dork because I have the version done by the same person who did Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. It’s Android Karanina. With steampunk androids.

Em said

That’s awesome, Valerie! I loved Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. Have you read Sense & Sensibilities & Sea Monsters? I may have to check out Android Karenina.

Valerie said

I haven’t read S&S&S yet — I’ll trade you lol! S&S is my favourite Austen work though. My book is falling apart and I’ve watched the 1995 movie version so many times I think my DVD is scratched.

Em said

:) I love that movie!!! It is what got me into Austen. I’ll totally send you a copy of S&S&S. I’ll follow you and you can PM me your address.

TeaLady441 said

Ooooh – I MAY have to watch that one again. I love the BBC Version, and parts of the 1995 movie. I try to combine it in my head for the perfect film.

P&P&Z was alright, but maybe too near and dear my heart – I kept thinking THIS DOESN"T MAKE ANY SENSE. S&S&S though was HILARIOUS. Maybe because they moved further from the source material? Guess I’ll have to try Android Karenina after the book club is done. :P

Finished 1493. Found it to drag a bit more than 1491, but then again, I’m more a fan of ancient history than recent history.

Started reading Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Up to chapter 4. So far so good!

JasonCT said

I’ve actually wanted to read these, I should put them on hold at the library.

It’s definitely a good read so far. It’s light and feels like a YA book with a YA level romance. But that’s good cause sometimes you need something less complicated than Kvothe and Denna.

PS When is Patrick Rothfuss’ next book coming out? Want!

Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”. Its a hell of a book, I’m planning on getting more of his stuff when I get a chance.

Finished Cold Days by Butcher and on to Trapped by Kevin Hearne. :)

For school I’ve been reading:
Shakespeare – King Lear and Winter’s Tale
Jamaica Kincaid – A Small Place
Jane Austen – Pride and Prejudice (yet again, and I’m sure it won’t be the last time)

Hey, how was Cold Days? I totally forgot it came out this month until a few days ago, still need to pick it up.

Claire said

I gave it 5 stars, definitely one of Butcher’s best books (Dead Beat is one of my other favorites).

Edit: I forgot to mention that a lot of plot build up is finally revealed in this book, and it closes up some other story arcs. Lots of important stuff happens!

Man I need down time to read….I’m so behind with butchers books. Gah!

Whooo, sounds good. I’ve fallen out of the DF pretty hard but I’m still curious and way too invested in the plot to just quit reading them, I’ll definitely have to snag it soon.

I’m about half way through Cold Days… love Harry Dresden! Didn’t care a whole lot for Ghost Story, but it was still a lot of fun.
I can’t sit down to read ever… but audio books have become my new addiction (besides tea that is)sure makes the commute tolerable. And the narrators make the story come to life. Iron Druid narrator makes me laugh out loud. Try it Sil!

Claire said

I keep hearing the audio books of Iron Druid are great but I’ve yet to check them out! This gives me a great idea for a Christmas present, though. :)

Kally Tea said

Yes, by all means do yourself a favor and try the audio books. Hearing him read Oberon’s lines kill me. I actually think I get more out of the audio versions then the read copy.
Merry Christmas!
www.Audible.com may even have a free download promo going on!

PS: By the way, Harry just left the island Demonreach! What a story! Harry’s back!

TeaLady441 said

I’ve never heard of the series, but I’ll have to check it out. Just googled it and I’m intrigued.

Sil select said

Wow totally missed these responses. Kally tea – not too sure about audio books, though it would get me through some books. I quite enjoyed reading the iron druid books, though i’m behind on those as well.

I’ve been on a Hemingway streak lately. The Sun Also Rises and For Whom The Bell Tolls are great for reading next to a hearty pu-er or black tea. Likewise, something more whimsical like Life of Pi or Everything is Illuminated is best paired with a green tea in my opinion.

All really good books!

Finished Clockwork Angel and almost done with Clockwork Prince. Great books! I was really turned off by the titles, but once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. Why couldn’t something like this be wildly popular instead of some other unnamed novels? All the elements are there, right? Love triangle, super-natural beings, cloudy wet weather, mystery, action, etc. All the good stuff, only better written and with more likable characters who do stuff that make sense. And a respectable heroine.

The whole time I was reading this, I kept thinking that it would make a great anime. But I’d settle for a movie. :)

I’m reading J.K. Rowling’s Casual Vacancy. Having a hard time getting into it. I hope it gets more interesting.

It is very different from the Potter books to say the least.

Any further thoughts on this one a month later? It’s in the window of a bookshop I pass every day, and I keep yearning to stop in and buy a copy when I have some spare cash, but don’t want to waste the money if it isn’t any good.

Em said

I couldn’t finish it. I didn’t like the characters or the story at about 50 pages in. I’ll stick with HP. If you really want to read it, get it from the library. I wouldn’t waste your money.

Just MJ said

Oh no! I’ll try the library then next time I’m there. Thanks for the heads up!
