Right now I’m reading Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.

Awesome combination. :D

How to Build an Android … by David Dufty
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
Just finished No Name by Wilkie Collins, did I already say that?

I really enjoyed Shutter Island. Wilkie Collins is a fun author too! I’ve been reading After Dark on my G3 at switchboard.

Shutter Island was amazing, I had a hard time putting it down. I now want to read everything by both Lehane and Collins. Comparing and contrasting, hmm there’s a dissertation in there somewhere… After Dark by Murakami? I’m reading 1Q84 now.

I read The Moonstone (Collins) for a class in university and have been scooping up every free e-book of his since then. He was a very prolific author, but there aren’t many still in print. Yay Project Gutenberg! I’ve never read any other by Lehane, I’ll have to look into that.

Yeah, I think he unfairly got seen as just a writer of ‘sensational’ novels, and Dickens was taken more seriously. Just in No Name, there were so many issues he dealt with such as the rights of women, class issues, and so on and yes, I do agree the plot and writing was very suspenseful, still, I think he deserves to be read today and not just seen as lesser than Dickens. Turns out he suffered from the same eye disease I do so maybe I’m feeling that solidarity, too, lol.

Reading Star of the Guardians series by Margaret Weis. She’s just not as good without Tracy Hickman. Still an okay read though. The first book mentions lapsong souchong and oolong. The lapsong was described as tarry.

I just finished up The Siren. A friend recommended it and I thought it would be good trashy fun but it turned out to be absolutely heartbreaking. I almost never get teary reading but two scenes had me nearly bawling. Before that I read Norwegian Wood, so I really need a non-depressing/emotional book.

Going with American Gods now, though knowing Gaiman it will probably have at least one scene that’s terribly sad. I need a cheerful book!

American Gods is the opposite of a cheerful book. It’s almost entirely depressing. Try his Graveyard Book instead if you are set on cheerful but still Gaiman. Or Stardust. It’s kind of melancholy but not hardcore depressing like American Gods.

Well I’m already 30% of the way through so I’m committed, I’ll just have to pick an extra cheerful one to make up for it! Or perhaps I’ll re-read an old favorite.

I can totally recommend A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen. You seem like a cat lover. :) Very uplifting and biographical. And awesome cat.

I am indeed a cat lover! I’ll put that on my to-read list ^^

Right now – “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston. Sure, it’s for a class, but I’m rather enjoying it. I’m also reading “Letters to a Young Contrarian” by Christopher Hitchens, although this is in between school work.

Reviving this thread! I really enjoy seeing what my fellow Steepsters are reading. :)

I just finished the first two books in the Daughters of Zeus trilogy by Kaitlin Bevis. It’s a unique modern twist to the Persephone origin myth. While I am normally irate at people taking liberties with my much adored Greek mythology (Grrr…. God of War) I actually don’t mind what the author did here. It’s obvious she understands and respects the stories even as she puts her own tweaks in. I literally couldn’t put the books down. They were so compelling.
It’s PG 13 at its worst moments and it’s a bit teen romance-y, but it’s also got well developed characters, action and lots of mythology! I sorta wish it would take a closer look at the symbolism of the the marriage between Persephone and Hades, but hey, it’s a thriller teen romance. We can’t get too deep here. :) I’d be all over a more mature version of this book though.

Fortunately, I don’t have to wait long for the last book of the trilogy to come out (May 17!). Otherwise, I might go crazy.

You’re very convincing! I’ll have to look it up for my kindle!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on them!
Sil, if you start this, you won’t want to put it down to go to sleep. This happened to me last night. Soooo sleeeeepyyyy.

I love books that play with the Greek Gods…if you’ve got room for a chick lit sort of a romp, check out Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Philips. I read it a few years ago and fell in love. The Gods are out of favour and living in London. Hilarity ensues. :) Interestingly they seem to be turning it into a movie this year.

Sounds interesting Uniquity. I will definitely check this one out. :)

Thanks for the rec! I’m partway through the second book and I need to know it’ll all work out. :) Guess I know what I’ll be reading May17th!

Yay! I’m so glad when a book rec works out. :)
I love your kitty’s sleepy face, btw. :)

I’m re-reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Loved it the first time through, and still loving it now! Great contemporary gothic mystery. After this one, though, it’s back to school work and research reading. =(

Uniquity said

Loved it. I read the newer one this year (Gates of Heaven? Something like that). I really need to re-read the three in order.

Emily M said

It’s one of my favorites! I have Angel’s Game, but I haven’t read that one yet. Have to get The Prisoner of Heaven (I think that’s the one you are talking about?). I was waiting for it to come out in paperback – which I see it has.

Uniquity said

Yes, that sounds more like it. I have only read them spread out so it takes me 100 pages or so to get all the appropriate back story in my mind but they work very well as stand alone novels as well. He is a remarkable writer!
