I am reading A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki (who wrote My Year of Meats). So far, I am really enjoying this novel.

I am re-reading Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris.
It is such a captivating well written book that is endearing to foodies.
Brew a big pot of tea, I find this book hard to put down.

I just finished reading “What Alice Forgot” by Liane Moriarty. I came across it at the library, and it looked intriguing. It turned out to be a great book. I really enjoyed it.

Serenity said

I read that, too!

:) Have you read any other books by her? That was the first one that I’ve read, and I liked it so much that I wanted to read her others, but when I looked into it they seemed to get mixed reviews.

Because I liked What Alice Forgot so very much, I immediately tried to track down Moriarty’s other novels. I think What Alice Forgot was a different kind of novel for the author to write. The other novels are lighter, I think. I love when authors expand their styles and challenge themselves.

I re-read Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O’Dell. I had read it in elementary school but remember little about it. I really liked it as a kid, and I still like it now. It makes me really curious about how dried abalone tastes.

Currently reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. About a third of the way in. So far, it makes sense. I had just seen an article from the New York Times about the role bacteria plays in our bodies and how it significantly affects our health and the way we interact with our environment. I’m reminded of this article because a while back, nutritional scientists did not understand the role of vitamins and minerals in a healthful diet. Hence, babies fed on formulas containing little more than carbs, fats and protein were sickly. Then they discovered vitamins and thought that solved the problem. But it turns out that we might have to start adding bacteria to baby formula as well? What else are we missing or overlooking? Man made foodstuffs are scary…

I just heard a discussion about bacteria on NPR, and it was fascinating! I was thinking the same thing: there is so much we don’t know!

The Liar by Stephen Fry. I love him, but this one is not holding my attention. Not sure what’s next…but I always have issues of The Walrus to catch up on so I read them in the car, heh.
