I am reading Red Badge of Courage (good so far!) and then after I am reading Bartleby. Both due this Tuesday!

I’m just having such and issue with the red badge of courage, it seems to drag for a bit then picks up…then drags. Best of luck in your read!

I’m about halfway through Middlemarch and also have a Russell Kirk book about education—though the latter has been neglected since I was sick all week. Middlemarch is easier going at the moment!

I just finished Doctor Sleep by Stephen King and started on Gunslinger, also by King. I’m also reading War of the Ancients trilogy by Richard Knaak and I’m on Demon Soul currently.

I am, as always, reading too many books at one time, but I am mostly focused on these at the moment:

“Mary Queen of Scots” by Antonia Fraser
“Debt: the First 5,000 Years” by David Graeber
“The Winter Sea” by Susanna Kearsley (I don’t like that one too much, but will finish it)

Ha! I’m the same way… Always have few on the go :D

I read Mary Queen of Scots when I was really young. I think I was 7 or 8. I remember being really disturbed by the death scene but it inspired in me a love of Tudor History for a while.

Kurt Vonnegut anything! Especially God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian. Very short. As well as Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian? Is that the same thing as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater?

jjmflynn said

I never heard of Mr. Rosewater. But looked it up- no, it’s different. Dr. Kevorkian is about short interviews with famous dead people while the narrator is put into forced near death experience episodes.

tb said

ah. Rosewater is a political satire condemning corrupt politics and businesses that only care about money.

FEED by Mira Grant (I have an obsession with zombies)

Kamyria said

Oh my… that looks good!

Sammerz314 said

It is! Do you like the zombie genre? There is a trilogy series called Autumn.. in my opinion, its better than Feed. Of course, theres the walking dead trilogy as well.

King Lear, by Shakespeare.
I read the tome to ward off evil grades,
For on the morrow tested I shall be;
Analyses, to take up twice a page,
You’d better know why Nothing’s love will reign.

This tea of tangerine and white
Goes well with dark and stormy night.

Maybe I should start writing tasting notes in iambic pentameter. “Nothing” is a theme from the play.

Ha! this was awesome! :D

Way beyond fabulous. On this dreary day of why-oh-why-can’t-the-snow-just-give-up-already, you made me smile with this. Thank you for that.

Isaila said

Making people smile is my favorite thing to do! My day is horribly snowy too, but there’s no school, so I’m re-reading act two of Lear; I ought be thinking in iambs by the time we’re doing studying this.

We’re not horribly snowy. We only got a skiff today. I’m just not so enamored with the stuff. We always have school, even when it’s well below zero wind chills. There isn’t any such thing as a snow day in Montana. If they were to close, we’d have to make the days up at the end of the year.

Isaila said

Ohh, montana. Cold. Well, here in NY we have fairly cold winters and pretty hot summers, b/c of the water. I suppose we both probably got the same amount of snow, but city folk tend to freak out at extreme weather…

that was excellent, Isaila! really impressive…especially that you can recreate something in a certain rhyme scheme. i love musicality in writing…

A while back on a deployment I stated one if those 100 must read lists. I’ve made it through about 36, but it’s getting a bit slow. I started “red badge of courage” , and I know it’s a junior high level read and a short book, but it’s just not interesting me. I had more fun reading “Moby Dick” and “The Portrait of Dorian Gray”. Maybe it’s just me. Still pushing through though.

I have a snow day so I laid around and read a book this morning. I started and finished How To Be A Good Wife by Emma Chapman and then had to google and see how others felt about the ending. I love psychological things with unreliable narrators but they can be so frustrating!

Now I am going to treat myself to a short Doctor Who book and if I am really lucky, also start a collection of essays that came in at the library for me. I packed up all of the books for our move – even the bathroom reader – and sent them to the new house. All I have are library books for now. I might try tackling House of Leaves which came in for me as well but I had no idea how big it is when I requested it. I can’t stand reading half of a book, so I might just send it back. I also packed all of our tea except three tins, so we are living on Golden Monkey today. First world problems!

Let me know how the doctor who book is, I’ve walked by them a bunch but never picked one up. Very interested though

I’ve read a couple now and enjoy them as a supplement to the show. Touched by an Angel is my favorite so far. I love Amy and the weeping angels.

Now I wonder if the books are just adaptations of actual episodes or like spin offs? I only say that because I do remember several episodes with Amy and the angels. Either way sounds really good.

Uniquity said

They are not actual episodes. They just tend to use characters you know. I’ve read one about daleks, one about weeping angels and one about zygons.
