Healthy (or healthier) Tea Complements

The other day I was thinking about snacks that I choose to go with my tea. I find myself finding it easy to go for cookies or scones but those options are high in sugar and fat. I briefly did some experimenting trying having veggies with my tea (such as baby carrots) but I found that the flavours just didn’t go well together. Even with fruit (such as apples) the flavours and sweetness is so bold that I find they tend to take away from the taste of the tea.

Recently, I was introduced to a new healthy alternative that I think works! I’ve started to eat roasted seaweed as a snack with my tea. So far I’ve had it with oolong but I’m sure that it would go really nicely with a green. The only potential drawback is that it is a little high in sodium and is usually seasoned with a type of seed oil.

Has anyone else tried roasted seaweed with their tea? Does anyone else have any ideas for healthy/healthier snacks to have with their tea?

I like to eat nuts or fruit with tea: there’s almost always one that goes with the blend you’re drinking, plus they are healthy!

I man, I haven’t had roasted seaweed with tea, but that sounds amazing! I think a lot of Japanese greens already taste like seaweed so eating seaweed with the tea seems so natural! I think actually there’s a Japanese food where green tea is poured over rice and sprinkled with crumbled seaweed.

As for other healthy foods, well, I don’t really eat with my teas since I think pretty much anything takes away from the taste of the tea. But air popped popcorn with minimal additions might be good. It’s light and healthy if you control the salt and fat. :)

Also, figs might be nice. They usually just taste sweet and not too much like any other flavor.

Good luck!

I’m on a bit of a sushi kick. Not sure if that counts as a snack or a meal, but it’s definitely good with Japanese greens!

Good tea is amazing with sushi! I love ordering in so that I can brew my tea exactly how I like it to accompany my meal. I have also been known to sneak my own tea into sushi restaurants… I just find that they generally use too little dry leaf and infuse at way to high a temperature. My sushi-eating experience is definitely enhanced with good tea; either oolong or green for sure!

I don’t like seaweed at all, so this would not be a good option for me. Chocolate is my favorite tea accompaniment, and dark chocolate is good for you (in moderation, of course). I also enjoy different types of nuts, almonds are my favorite.

I love pairing chocolate with tea! Chili-infused chocolate with a nice chai, bitter orange with a cup of earl grey, almond with a roasty oolong. Of course it’s not good for you ALL the time but one square a day is perfectly fine. I find dark chocolate so indulgent that I rarely eat more than that anyway.

So do you mean ‘complement’ rather than ‘compliment’?

Oops, I did! Thanks for catching that :)

Granola is a good alternative to cookies and scones I have found. There are a lot of different types of granola out there as well, chocolate ones, dried fruit, etc. so you could probably pair them well with different kinds of tea.

I find boiled eggs with a little chili powder and salt are delicious with tea, as are many fruits, and I also like whole wheat toast with a little jam or peanut butter
