What's you favorite tea to have with milk?
I love milk in my chai, but preparing it in a traditional stovetop way. Which sort of makes it a different beverage entirely.
I might have to put milk in Mariage Freres’ Marco Polo after all the buzz it’s been getting!
I hardly ever add milk to my teas, but now I’m thinking about trying it with some of my favorite black teas, like Golden Monkey by Adagio or Dawn by the Simple Leaf. I think with a little sugar and the right amount of milk, it would be delicious. I’m actually pretty excited now!
I only add trim (or super trim) milk to teas, regular milk can sometimes overwhelm the tea with a creamy taste, especially with the more delicate ones. I mostly drink black tea and prefer it milky, especially nice Assams or a strong earl grey.
I was raised on skim (what you call trim) and never thought it was the “milk flavored water” others did… although it did take me a while to get used to a 1:1 or even 1:2 ratio of water to milk- I thought that was watery. Even though I do occasionally use a TB of creamer in my chai, I don’t think I’ll ever be a person to add a “splash” of milk to my teas. Now I’ve switched to Smart Balance milk, a skim milk that has (or so they say, I’ve never tried it) the consistancy of 2% milk. The only tea I add milk to is Numi’s Chocolate Pu Erh and chias. It’s especially good w/ 52teas Mayan Chocolate Chai- there’s so much chocolate and cayenne in it that it doesn’t wimp out.
Today for the first time ever, I tried a thai chai from Adagio Teas. For the latter half of my first cup, I put in some boiled milk. It was also the first time I ever put milk in any tea! But it was good. A day of firsts!
Sounds delicious to me—reminds me of thai food, which often pairs lemongrass with coconut milk. Om nom nom.
I’m a big fan of milk tea, in the Asian sense. For example, Hong Kong style milk tea is usually a strong black tea with either evaporated milk and sugar, or sweetened condensed milk. I’m also a fan of milk tea with tapioca. My favorite place sweetens the tapioca before making the drink, making it doubly delicious. They also do flavored milk teas, which I think is usually milk tea with some sort of syrup or powder mixed in, but I’ve only ever ordered it and never made it. At home, I do keep sweetened condensed milk on hand to use with some Bigelow English Teatime or Earl Grey.

Do you know how to make HK milk tea? I can’t seem to figure it out….
I think it’s just adding enough milk and sugar. At home I use sweetened condensed milk cause I like the taste. In restaurants, I think they use sugar or simple syrup and evaporated milk. I would call this the standard taste of milk tea. I’ve also seen some people just use sugar and half and half.
I usually add a dash of milk or soy milk to my masala chai (black) although green chai I drink ‘naked’. Also a must for my English/Scottish breakfast tea or Assam!
Chai Tea latte or proper Indian Chai Tea boiled with milk and spices is fantastic. One specialist tea that we have tried to incorporate for tea drinkers that add milk is our Black Tea with Sunflower Blossoms it is a bit of a twist on the normal black tea we have used a ceylon black tea base and added apple bits, orange peels, pineapple, sunflower blossoms, cardamom, lemongrass and coconut rasps. It would be great to get some feedback on this tea we like it but we dont know what the masses think
