Yunnan Amber - A new beer, brewed with Yunnan Dian Hong

There are a couple of craft brewers (Great Leap Brewery and Boxing Cat Brewery) in China who are experimenting with brewing beer using tea from Yunnan. This new brew called “Yunnan Amber”, was brewed using Dian Hong (滇红) tea. It as a limited batch of 1,000 liters, hopefully I can try some tonight in Beijing. I’ll post a review of the tea beer on steepster – if there is interest. Really looking forward to trying this beer!

Excellent, looking forward to the review! The Silver Needle does sound like a challenge, would love to know how it is and I agree with your suggestion of a pu’er. I just had a chai beer with juniper, but the black tea itself was hard to discern. I wonder if I could do something like this at our local brew pub, where you can brew and bottle your own batches, my sister did this for her wedding: “Matrimony Ale”. I for one would like to experiment with Lapsang Souchong and jasmine (separately mind you). Mmm maybe a jasmine mead!

Live for the experience in all things! I am cowardly but do so.

That sounds amazing! I recently had a beer brewed with Chai from Dogfish Head that was so good!

Lindemans (a belgian brewer) also make a Tea Lambic – http://www.lindemans.be probably very hard to find outside of Belgium.

Oh my! I love their raspberry one but tea! Gotta take a trip to Belgium! Drink tea beer and eat chocolate!

I don’t really care for beer. Recently, I broke down and bought a bottle of chocolate stout, and did not care for it. I had to try it though … it was chocolate! I worry that would be my reaction here, with this beer, too, but, I still would be willing to try it… and I look forward to hearing your thoughts about it too.

The next beer I’m going to try is going to be one that was inspired by VooDoo Donut’s bacon maple bar donut. I don’t think I will like the beer, but I have to try it. And… the bottle is pink. Like pepto pink. So, another reason why I have to get it.

I saw the bottle and wanted it, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to drink it. It’s a smoked beer though, so that’s interesting about it, but I figured from my dislike of smoky lapsang souchong, this one wouldn’t work either!

Had a great night last night at Great Leap Brewery, and tried 3 tea beers in total, including an Iron Buddha Blond (made with Tie Guan Yin), a Silver Needle White (made with the same), and the Yunnan Amber (made with Yunnan Dian Hong). Pics and reviews in the link below. Comments much appreciated:

Gives my dreams of opening a “tea bar” a possible new dimension. Just need to find a brewer. I think Big Red Robe is just asking to be made into a red ale!
