Ground Licorice
I’m the adventurous type and purchased some ground licorice root as a tea sweetener. Funny thing: I have no idea how to use it! If anyone can provide some ideas of how much to try in a cup, teas and blends to try it with, etc. I’d be most grateful!
Haven’t tried licorice root (ground or otherwise) in home blends yet. I am interested in what you discover :)
It won’t dissolve like sugar, I don’t think, so I would probably experiment with steeping it along with the leaves. Adding it late in the steeping though because the licorice flavour can get pretty strong and slightly cloying if it gets a long time. During times of illness I usually steep some chunks of licorice root because I think they soothe the throat and coughing a bit. Whne you pour boiling water on it, it’s almost instantly ready. It gives off flavour very quickly.
I often drink licorice root when my throat is sore. It can be steeped on its own, or added to anything. It will add a little sweetness in the aftertaste and it coats the throat well. I have never used powder, but I also imagine it won’t dissolve, like Angrboda said. You could steep it in a strainer or just leave it at the bottom of your cup/pot.
I use ground licorice root in my Fresh Start blend. Since it’s naturally sweet and caffeine free, it’s great to blend with other herbs like holy basil, peppermint, spearmint, chamomile.
