effect of teacups on the tea drinking experience
last night I started drinking my tea using a particular set of glass cups that I found around the house.
They resemble a ‘wineglass mug’ with a handle and no raised stand.
Tea tastes and smells remarkably better in these cups.
the shape of the glass seems to trap in the aromatic vapors of the tea so that they hover and concentrate in the glass.
I agree….myself, I find using bone china makes the tea taste better and also drinking tea while eating dinner!
Asaf, you should post a picture of the mug, I’d like to hunt one down that’s similar and try that out.
Makes sense though, my boyfriend is a budding ale snob and he’ll complain if he doesn’t have the right glass around.
Here you go Nick. Its about 200ml

I find ceramic to be just fine, but I am really diggin’ on that wine glass teacup! Sometimes I’ll just pour my tea into a pint glass, leaving enough room at the top to hold it.
All I know is that when I drink water from a ceramic cup/mug, it completely changes the taste of the water for me. But I don’t notice much change when drinking tea from ceramic. Maybe I will try an experiment….
The key aspect is that the top of the cup is narrower than the widest part of the body, which help to trap aromatic vapor in the cup.
seems like a cogniac glass is the ideal shape.

what we need is a borosilicate, double walled version of this:
(but with a slightly wider opening)
