Thai Iced Tea

Love it? Hate it? How do you make it?

If I make it myself, then it’s good both ways. :) I like it hot the best.

I like it and occasionally order it at our local Thai restaurant, but prefer to make it at home where I can control the sweetness and make it a little lighter if less authentic.

I’ve never tried Thai tea hot. Maybe I should :)

How do you make it, Lena (both hot and cold)? Post your chai method in the chai thread too:)

Here’s my traditional method: bring 2 cups water to a low boil. Add two table spoons of sugar. I like to use brown sugar with my chai teas. Stir in until sugar is totally dissolved. Add two heaping spoons of your chai…a little more or less depending on your tastes. Let everything boil for about 10 minutes…this cracks open all of the pods and spices. Add 2 cups of milk. Whole milk is ideal. I used a cup of skim milk and a cup of cream in my Thai Chai (Adagio) review. Delish! But DO try to use a milk with fat in it. Adding the milk will halt the boiling process for a few minutes. Let the mix all start to boil again. Watch your milk and stir stir stir! I let mine all boil together for about 5 minutes. Take it off the heat and let it sit for about 10 minutes (or longer if you can wait. it just keeps getting better) and you are good to go enjoy a fab cup. This makes about 2-3 average mugs. I keep the ratio the same when I make larger quantities.

Enjoy!

Reposting this:
I love Thai Iced Tea…I made some with the family the other day, and it came out great. They sell thai tea (a low grade black tea with flavoring and red and yellow dye) in a bag at an Asian grocery. We just steeped that for 5 minutes, refrigerated it for an hour or so, and poured it into glasses. Then, we let people spoon in sweetened condensed milk to their glasses to sweeten it. We also had some simple syrup on hand and used some of that in addition to the sweetened condensed milk. We also made boba pearls, which turned out really yummy in the tea.

I guess I need to check at our local Asian grocery and see if they carry Thai tea. I’ve never noticed it loose, just canned in the form of concentrate. (That didn’t appeal to me much.)

Does anyone have a good online source for Thai tea? Is the Adagio Thai Chai like a Thai tea?

Thanks!

I haven’t had luck finding thai tea leaves online anywhere. There might be some specialty Asian online stores that carry it, though.

Adagio’s Thai Chai is not like Thai iced tea at all. It’s coconut chai. Most “Thai Tea” sold by companies is coconut/lemongrass tea, not red Thai tea.

anyone tried this website ? http://grocerythai.com/thai-tea-set-i-p-576.html?osCsid=1fd9b9c1e2891d9f9abc3fab190b8fce i’m tempted to try some of their ‘thai tea’ blend stuff

That looks like the tea blend I used. I don’t know why you’d need the filter bag, though…a regular strainer/filter would work fine.

Oh, and the website looks legit…I’ve ordered stuff on “specialty grocery” sites like that before. They’re usually run by a family that owns a grocery store as well. If you’re feeling really unsure, you could check Amazon.com and see if anyone is selling thai tea leaves there.

thanks, yea my first order usually makes me nervous at an online store so i try to keep it small

Thank you! They have several options besides the kit, so all I have to do now is decide which one.
