Sadly, I have no idea how much I ended with last year. I promise to be keep more track this year. No conversions. Period.

January: Let’s call whole Pod Lampionami stuff (there was a cake and tea for me and best friend): 1008 CZK

February… 800 CZK. Two pouches of tea, Wooricha (50g) & Ha Giang Ché Den (100g). Dobrá čajovna.

March, 43 CZK — Box of Pickwick
744.11 CZK — CGfoods. Brands: Richard, Curtis, Battler, Hyson, Naturavita. Tea bags only.

April: 50.90 EUR Paper&Tea green teas.

Haha, I am trying to cut back, and you’ve got me spending more! But I look forward to tasting those Georgian teas!

About me: I have been buying tea since 2016 (June 1 will be 6 years since my first Davids Tea website order). I’d like to find the time to truly evaluate the $$$$$$ I spend on tea/tea ware (I have a bedroom just for tea that is overflowing plus a 4502493924032 large plastic bins in the basement plus a decent stash at work). I’m a hoarder by nature (not just of tea) but I will continue to find a balance between enjoying new things and not wasting/appreciating what I already have.

2021: I’d have to check, probably $10-$15K USD. I didn’t do too much traveling (just trips to Austin, Chicago, and Seattle) which is my other major spend.

2022 goals: $600 monthly limit / $7200 for the year. Sipdown trying to make my “tearoom” area into an actual nice space to store/enjoy tea/relax. Find all the teas with chocolate, candies, sugar, stevia, coconut, nuts, etc. / any tea 2018 or older (unless an aged tea or a traditional tea that can be older) and working on drinking or sharing or finding creative uses.

January 2022:
$50.60 ($24.99 on tea / $25.61 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/4
$20.63 ($10.99 on tea / $9.64 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/7
$50.88 ($50.88 on tea) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/10
$122.40 ($122.40 on teaware/accessories) Tea Thoughts 1/10
$37.30 ($37.30 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/11
$120.79 ($120.79 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/12
$90.31 ($90.31 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/14
$108.22 ($54.12 tea / $54.10 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/19 (#7 for Jan)
$78.94 ($50.13 tea/ $28.81 on teaware) DAVIDsTEA USA 1/20 (#8 for Jan)
$75 ($75 on teaware) Tea Thoughts 1/21
$72.91 DAVIDsTEA USA 1/26 (#9 for Jan)
$174.85 ($174.85 on tea) Amoda 1/28

customs/duties on DF? I really need to just say F it and order from there or MF this year.

Courtney said

No extra charges on DF — I’ve ordered from them once per year for the past 3 years without any issues on customs. This year the total was actually $285 CAD (not incl. in my total due to cost split). :)

Crowkettle said

@Sil, my two orders from DF in Nov-Dec had no extra customs/duties as well. Shipping costs were on par with US/CAN prices (no free shipping threshold unfortunately).

I was dinged for customs/duties on MF though, which sucked as they are pricier begin with.

Sil select said

@crow – yeah pretty sure i’m doing an MF order since DF doesn’t sell the one tea i want online. But tea up to 20KG isn’t supposed to be hit with duty or whatever

Crowkettle said

Let me know how the MF order goes if/when you get around to it! Might’ve been the advent calendar (non-tea item?) that triggered the duty on my parcel. Or it was arbitrarily applied brokerage fees – can’t remember now.

I spent around US$870 last year, which is more than I probably should have. About US$250 of that was on teaware, which is something I plan to cut down on this year. TeaForum has been a bad influence, leading me to top-quality but pricy vendors. I managed to buy as much tea as I consumed, so technically, my stash hasn’t grown any bigger, but I’d like it to get smaller in 2022. (We all can dream…)

Ideally, I’d like to keep my spending below $800 CAD, but a more realistic goal is below $1,000 CAD. I’m going to be part of a big group buy this month and will hopefully do another one for oolongs this summer, and these should account for the lion’s share of my spending.

I’ve never properly tracked my spending, but since we record everything on a budget spreadsheet now I can get a decent estimate. In 2021, it looks like I spent $1907.53 CAD on tea (and teaware, and shipping) from pretty much 3 companies – DavidsTea, 52teas, and Dessert by Deb. I should look up my 2019 and 2020 spending – 2020 is likely out of control, as I went crazy with the pandemic, but 2019 should be more conservative.

Goal for this year? Buy less… drink more… haha.

Historical Spending (estimated, all tea-related expenses)
2021: $1907.53 CAD
2020: $1747.47 CAD
2019: $1435.83 CAD

2022 running total: $963.09
January: ($88.61)
$27.97 – DavidsTea
$60.64 – DavidsTea

February: ($222.55)
$56.03 – 52teas
$111.12 – DavidsTea
$55.40 – DavidsTea

March: ($204.16)
$90.73 – DavidsTea
$61.57 – DavidsTea
$51.86 – DavidsTea

April: ($154.52)
$55.86 – DavidsTea
$51.94 – Dessert by Deb
$46.72 – 52Teas

May: ($293.25)
$12.50 – 52Teas
$5.49 – DavidsTea
$252.82 – 52Teas (subscription)
$7.48 – DavidsTea
$7.48 – DavidsTea
$7.48 – DavidsTea

DT, 52teas, DbyDeb, along with Tea Thoughts and Friday Tea are my main companies I spend my $$$ on as well :)

Kittenna said

I wish my spending was more diverse! But then it would be really, REALLY insane… I really miss the physical DT location where I could get much smaller samples and not explode my cupboard by 50g for each new tea…

Dustin said

Same. DT started closing some locations a few years ago and when the pandemic hit they closed all the US stores. I miss being able to go in and check out the teas in person.
