New to tea and "lovin it !!"

I always thought I hated TEA ( gasp !!!). When I was little my mom would have tea daily. I loved watching the ritual of it. I would get excited by the smell, the beautiful cups, and table setup. Every now and then I would ask for a sip ,just knowing I was going to love it!! Then yuck- it was so bitter ,the smell and taste just didn’t go together. I always felt so disapointed. I’m not sure why I wanted it so bad. My Mom still let me participate, she would put hot water in my cup with a slice of lemon and a little honey, but it was just not the same to me. I’ve always felt like I was missing something. So for the last 33 years if someone would offer me tea, I would decline and ask for coffee. THEN last year my husband was working out of state and I went to visit him. While there I got sick, my husband was at work and I was to dizzy to drive anywhere so I walked to a little cafe down the street from the hotel. When I ask for a pop, they said their machine was down and all they had was water or tea. I was so tired of water I decided to try the tea again. It took the waitress a few minutes to come back with my tea, but it was worth the time, thats what I always thought it should taste like !! I was in heaven. I sat their for over an hour and had five cups. My mom had passed away about a year before, I just sat by myself and thought about her and all our special tea partys. When I got home I went to the market and bought some teas, again dissapointment. I couldn’t get it right. After numerous boxes of tea ,I finally complained to my aunt. I told her, I thought that while I was sick it must have changed how I could taste. She stated that if the waitress didnt bring me a tea bag and hot water, then she steeped it with looseleaf tea in the back. She said if that was the case I would never get what I was looking for from boxed tea bags. So she steeped me a cup of tea while explaining about the different teas, times, and temperatures. The excitement on her face and the passion she felt for the tea was catching! When she handed me that cup it was different than what I had at the cafe, but so much better! When I got home, I pulled out my tea bags and steeped them the way she told me too. Oh how much better it was! I used to just boil my water and throw my tea bag in while it steeped I would go do something and come back ten minutes later. Yeah I figured out what the problem was,LOL ! And I figured out my mom used to do it the same way, but then she always loved bitter things (her tasted pallet was affected due to all her medications).
So I have been trying all my tea bags and realized if their steeped correctly they are all drinkable, some more than others. Now I’ve used up all that I had bought, so I put in an order from The Tea Table. We have no place within 85 miles to buy looseleaf tea, so I had to buy over the internet. I ordered 1oz from each section, except pu-erh( They didnt have it). They came in the mail today!!! I’m so excited I don’t know where to start!?!
Well I’m just going to jump in! I have my timer and thermometer ready. let the tasting begin!

I love this story so much, I’m going to read it again. It will give me happy dreams about tea.
My deepest condolences on the loss of your Mother. Mine died a little over a year ago. She loved tea. She was my first tea provider! : )

You’re in for a good time! For most of my life, I thought tea was boring and not that good. Just in the last year, I discovered how much I love it, after learning about loose tea and how to make it. Steepster has really helped.

Welcome! Your story is lovely! Don’t worry though, you’re not the only one who used to hate tea. :O When I was about 15 I tried my very first hot tea, and hated it with a passion! I don’t know many children who like drinking anything unsweetened, and I was no exception.

My boyfriend was actually the one who got me into trying hot tea again. I started with a bag tea, but it was so fruity and he had put sugar in it (which was the missing piece of the puzzle for me). I decided from there to try other flavors, then I moved onto lose leaf after hearing all of the great experiences others have with loose leaf tea, and from there I fell in love!

I have a hard time going back to the bag, because it’s just much more fun actually making the tea and being able to control the amount of flavor. That and it can be cheeper depending of course.

I have probably only been REALLY into drinking tea for about 6 months now, but I can say I really enjoy the experience of tea drinking.

I agree! I love loose leaf partly becuase of the process or “ceremony” in making it.

I agree also! I’ve always drank tea but I never had that much fun with it until I tried loose tea! There is simply not that much to throwing a bag into a cup of water but preparing loose tea is ART!! :)

Welcome! Start making room in your cabinets: tea samples left unattended for long tend to mate and multiply :)

I’m worried that mine are plotting a rebellion to take over the house.

Yeah, I agree. Before I knew it, my stash increased exponentially without my knowing it a lot of the time.

Wonder if I’ll see any of you on that show hoarders sometime. Rooms packed to the ceiling with tea. narrow walkways through the house between tea tins…
