Best Scone Recipe?
I was in Ottawa this past week and spent most of my meal times at the Scone Witch eating sconewiches and scones with jam and devonshire cream. I was wondering if anyone had a scone recipe they were particularly fond of that they wanted to pass on. These scones were to die for, I would love to be able to reproduce them at home.
Ooh. Looking forward to replies, here. I’m always down for a good scone! Thanks for starting this thread, Sweet Canadian!
My absolute favorite is this cream scone recipe: http://www.joyofbaking.com/scones.html
Sometimes I like to add mini chocolate chips to it.
I was totally going to recommend this one. Love this blog. :) I made these once and they were amazing.
This one is my favorite! http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2006/11/dream-a-little-dream-of-scone/ I make them and freeze a bunch – instant breakfast for the next week or two.
Actually my go-to scone is the one momo linked. I usually make it by patting into two circles. I dot one circle with fresh berries (raspberry and blueberry are great choices) and then top it with the other circle. Pat to seal around berries and then cut into wedges. The top part of the wedge tends to droop over at the tip and it looks pretty neat showing the berries like that.
I’ve also used cinnamon chips mixed into the dough.
Otherwise, I love these coconut cherry scones (http://www.nicolesrecipes.com/prscone2.html) and these cornmeal blueberry scones (http://www.nicolesrecipes.com/prscone18.html). The cornmeal gives them a tang you don’t normally get but it isn’t strong enough to take them out of sweet and into savory territory.
And like cheetah_pita, I usually make mine up in advance (baked or unbaked) and keep them frozen till I want one or two. :) And I am soooo trying that Smitten Kitchen recipe. She does such good stuff there.
I’d also like to submit this recipe as it is citrus season and I absolutely adore this food blogger. I’ve tried a few of her recipes and they are always amazing.

I was gifted with a couple of home grown grapefruits from my MIL who has a house in California. I think I’ll make a double batch of these and share them with her as a thank you. :)
Those sound wonderful. Even though I stink at segmenting citrus for recipes I’ll have to try this!
I imagine they’d be great even if you skipped adding the segments. Maybe double up on the zest and throw in some frozen berries instead. :)
Interesting reading the recipes, I’ve never made one that didn’t have shortening or buttermilk!
I’ve had scones with shortening, but they are infinitely more flavorful with butter. I do like the tang of the buttermilk though. :)
http://www.food.com/recipe/maple-oat-nut-scones-starbucks-157241 this one is my absolute favorite! I bake often and have tried lots of different scones. Anything with a ton of dried fruit and spices are always good too. Especially dates!
I just got a new scone pan a few weeks ago. Can’t wait to try out some of these recipes! Thanks everyone!
