Looking for a quick on-the-go tea
I’m going out of the country for just over a week, and I’m not even sure if I’ll have access to a water heater! I get horrible headaches when I don’t have any caffeine, so I’m wondering if anyone knows of any good teas that are powdered (besides matcha), or if any will steep well in bottled water. I don’t know how cold the water bottles will be, but I definitely will have access to bottles of water.
Thanks for the help
This isn’t a tea reommendation, but depending on how much room you have in your luggage, you can get a hot shot. It is like a very small coffee machine, but it heats water in 30-60 seconds. Works great for travelling.
Not sure if you are willing to use the brand, but in the summer I love stash powdered green tea designed for instant cold brew (stick in water and stir/shake). I stick to the mint green mostly. each packet is for 16 ounces of water.
Den’s has some cold brew teas too, I have yet to try any.
powdered sencha? i imagine you can put any tea in a blender and it will be fine :) i like to cold brew green tea so it doesnt go bitter on me. but never tried it on normal temp. it will probly draw out more caffeine than cold, im guessing :D
This may help you cold brew any tea that will go into a water bottle. However, it depends on the style of water bottle. Just a thought.
Otherwise, Jas eTea has a powdered black tea…
Good luck on your search and enjoy your trip.
I found some black matcha on red leaf’s website. Has anyone tried that? How would it hold up to a cold brew?
I recently tested some of Red Leaf’s black matcha. I liked it, but its quite different from regular black tea. Matcha doesn’t really brew, so it can be made on the spot mixed in cold or hot water. I also find that for me, many regular loose teas, such as Chinese blacks, work well for overnight cold brewing in a refrigerator.
Take a look on ebay for this :The TeaSpot Steep & Go Water Bottle Cold Brew Tea Infuser / Steeper
It works with disposable bottles and looks very portable, has both US and European water bottle washers
I’m not sure about caffeine release in cold brew versus hot but you can cold brew pretty much any tea. It may take a while to flavour, but it’s much less likely to get bitter which is nice.
EDIT to add that I don’t use anything special to cold brew. A T-Sac is nice if you’re concerned about the leaves coming through but you can leave them loose as well and just avoid drinking them. :)
Definitely less caffeine extraction with cold brewing. I don’t have science behind me so much as caffeine sensitivity and experience. I’d say go with matcha so you consume the whole leaf and all the caffeine. :)
Love cold brewed tea though. :)
Just to follow up about the matcha, its super easy to just put a teaspoon in a 16 oz water bottle and shake it up. As I understand matcha, it has plenty of caffeine but is released more slowly than regular tea. Personally, I use it to make lattes with, but I’ve noticed a lot of people on Steepster love it mixed just with water. The flavored ones from Red Leaf are really good in my opinion. Check out the reviews.
