Common Ground: Birding

I know there are a few birders on Steepster, but I finally decided to make one of these Common Ground topics! It is migration season after all! I am passionate about shorebirds but moved away from the coast this past winter, so I’m glad that they still migrate through Ohio. I love the warblers too but they are really my boyfriend’s favorite, as he loves birding by ear.

Steepster birders, how is your migration season going? Seen any good birds latey?

I haven’t been out on any missions lately, but I am enjoying the increase in avian activity I can see from our window. There are some blue tits nesting in a hole in a neighboring building, and we’ve got a good number of goldfinches fluttering in the trees. It’s nice hearing the bird song again, too.

I’m going back home to NJ next month, just in time for the warblers and shorebirds, so I’m planning a few field trips for my visit. Maybe I’ll get lucky and see some early catbirds – I miss those little guys.

Ooh, yeah, NJ in May is awesome for migration. And I am jealous of your Blue Tits! I love them.

I am very excited about the spring migration. I miss all those little birdies. I’ve been setting up all the bird feeders these past few days. As usual, the House finches and Goldfinches are among the first to arrive in Southern Ontario. Although I do enjoy the beautiful song of the finch, I can’t wait until the Warblers swoop in in May :).

I lived further north before and it is amazing to me how early all the warblers arrive here in southern Ohio! We heard an Ovenbird this morning.

Really? Nice! When do they begin arriving in Ohio?

Just in the last week or so. At first it was a few reports but now they are flooding in! Hopefully I will get a chance to go out this weekend and find them!

I’m a very casual birder. I live in a wooded area near a large wooded state park, so I get to see a lot of types of birds, both residents and migrants. Right now, I’m waiting for my crotchety little hummingbirds to return. I have a pair of pileated woodpeckers that I just love, and see a lot of other uncommon or common but interesting bids, like bald eagles, great horned owls, turkeys, and various other game birds.

I’m in Maryland, a good state to see a big variety of birds. I have new binoculars in the mail as we speak!
