Tea Buying Hiatus Support Group

I managed to do a good job of not buying regularly when I have a lot. But then again, I don’t have a tea store close enough by that I get tempted regularly. If I did, I might be more inclined especially as summer has arrived and my palate changes.

If I lived any where close to a tea store…… They would know me so well. I would be like a tea stalker.

The amount of tea I have seems to have no bearing on whether I order tea or not, LOL. I’ll keep a list of teas I want to try from different companies, & WHAM! all of a sudden I’ll place 3 or more orders in less than 15 minutes.

Alrighty, I did my June Butiki order. So I’m back on hiatus until July. :) I feel like I’ll make it though, because I didn’t feel panicked to put in my June order right on the first. In fact, I felt like I could’ve waited a while, but I didn’t want to risk running out of Premium Taiwanese Assam, so I went ahead and did my order now.

Soooo attempting to go until July since I had a mini lapse in May that amounted to a small order split with Terri and a tiny order split with kittenna. Soooo here’s to a month of no new purchases or swaps, so that I can get my cupboard down to 200 by July. It’s always good to have goals right? lol (of course July = multiple orders but what’s new…)

Good luck. My hiatus went to hell already. One order and things suddenly get out of hand. How does that happen?!? Oh well, here’s to starting over (cheers clinks with tea cups).

I’m gonna inject in here that my relapse with Sil was pre-meditated, with each of us selecting teas to order & split with each other, & once I started ordering, Lala, I kind of went off the deep end for about an hour, placing actually 5 orders (verdant, mandala, butiki, thepuritea, & smith), plus the pre-relapse order a week before from Adagio. There are voices clamoring in my head to order from several other companies as well. “what the hell, now that you’ve ordered THIS much, you might as well go ALL THE WAY.” Luckily, most of the things I ordered are sample sizes. So hopefully I can get things back under control & keep them that way til at least July…maybe August… (probably July.. ;)

Joining the “wanting to wait until July” club. The last ONLINE order I placed was 06May. I bought some replace favorites in store at Davids a couple of weeks ago. Bought a tin of cheap local Chinese market green tea (beautiful 1/2 lb tin for 4.49 – couldn’t resist the tin is worth that much). Oh yeah I also bought two fruit tisanes to ice from a local shop. I’ve been really good online, not so much with local stores.
No buying ANYTHING until July!!!!! I have a couple of swaps coming that should tide me over. Cheers

So, I’ve noticed that after a big splurge, as the teas arrive I’m so excited with anticipation. Once the final box arrives, a part of me is like, “Is that all?”

Terri- I think that you just diagnosed me. I am also addicted to MORE!

TeaLady441 said

Haha. Here we go again. I REALLY need to wait until July! There’s no reason not to. I have so many new teas to try that if I bought more they’d just sit there. So… hands off!

There better not be some amazing once a year sales going on in June. There won’t be right? No one ever says “Christmas in June” sale… :P #phew #safe

Sil select said

Yeah i want a chance to get through some of the last of the remaining tea swap teas i haven’t tried. I’m hoping if i focus i can get to 200 by the end of June…i think.

(smirking @ Sil)
I’m doing the same. My official count as of this morning is 311. That’s crazy. My current goal is to only drink teas I haven’t sampled yet until I’ve sampled all the new stuff (from purchases & swaps). Then I want to focus on sipdowns.

Sil select said

terri – if i did that it would take me until july just to get through the teas i haven’t tried lol. Plus i like bringing tried and tested teas to work in the morning. Leave my “new experiences” for when i’m at home in case of disappointment, and so i can focus on the tea heh

TeaLady441 said

Yeah – it’s a good idea to mix between favourites and unknowns. I’ve been burned too many times, and sometimes you just REALLY need a good tea at work. (Unless you have the option of hiding under your desk when things get rough.)

That might be true…I’m gonna try, but I guess I don’t have to be perfect…especially since I’m not!
Besides, that was just Ms Theresa talking, trying to inject some semblance of control over the whole “tea situation”, as she likes to call it.

Sil select said

haha control! with a cuboard over 200 there is NO control!

True dat!

This girl is also waiting until July because that’s when I’m going to Paris! I’ve made carts for various shops to be visited and I am concerned that I will be bringing back nearly 3kg of tea! Why do they all have to sell in only 100g amounts? Unless I can talk the people at Dammann into letting me get some 50g bags like I managed to do the last time I was there!

So it’s only 11 and the office is a whopping 29C! I think that means I’ll be drinking less tea so I’d better be buying less tea.

Unless I really get into making it iced….

I ordered some cinnamon chips for completing my finals.

Does that count? I like my tea spicy.

yyz said

Nah, that’s seasoning… You can argue also that it’s a tea extender allowing you to use a little less leaf, or something that might make a tea you generally ignore more palatable so really it’s something that will help you keep to your hiatus. Right?

Yes, and I like black teas with cinnamon. It’s better than adding powered cinnamon after I brew the tea. (Oh, and I got a tea sample.)

My tea shop has an herb and spice section where I buy chips, dry lemon, orange, tulsi, mint, gogi berry, ginger,Burdock root, elderberries and so on to add to tea or make blends. Nice to have around since flavored teas cost a lot more and some are easy to make with a good base tea.

I’m currently preparing my birthday (it’s tomorrow) order with Mandala. I promised myself I would wait until later in the month but I’m craving a tea order. And it’s going to be humongous big.

I just ordered some birthday tea too! Now I have to stop, for so many reasons.

Happy birthday, fellow Gemini! Mine is next week.

Dexter said

Happy Birthday Grace. I fell victim to the Mandala urge too. No regrets though their tea is so worth it (I’m getting some of the Special Dark Pu’erh – I’m so excited!!!)

Happy Birthday to you both! Birthdays are super special, perfect for splurging on tea and teaware :P :)

graceatblb said

Thanks for all the happy birthday wishes and Happy Birthday, High Adventure. This will be my final order until at least the end of July…or until I run out of Special Dark. It was between this or a new iPod. Tea always wins.

Dexter3657—I just saw they put Special Dark up on the site. Made me do a little happy dance. It’s being added to my order along with a Noble Mark cake.

Sil select said

WOOT! YAY for birthday orders!!

Dexter said

Grace….. Noble Mark cake – jealous – that was on my wish list, I chose to get the phatty cake instead and ordered 2 oz of Noble Mark loose. Too many good teas to choose from there.

Happy birthday, you guys. I have to wait till October for birthday tea. Uuuugh. Actually, I have to wait till July when I can buy again, I’ve already done my buying for June, but it’s not here yet. Waaaah!

Yeah, my birthday is in October too.

I’m ordering from one place on Saturday, but it’s with a gift card, and doesn’t count.

Well fell off the wagon again. Big time!! Ha ha. I made a lot of orders to stock up on cupboard essentials and tea for iced teas and then there were a few sales that detoured me on the way. I am going to try to not buy tea for the rest of the summer. Now I know that is not really a feasible goal but I definitely do not need anymore. I have more than enough to make a pitcher of iced everyday until well into the fall.

You accomplish your big goals by making small goals.

Goal 1: do not buy any more tea today.
Goal 2: do not buy any more tea this month.
Goal 3: do not buy any more tea this summer.
Bonus goal: quit goading others into buying more tea :P

Sil select said

Goal 4: send teas to Sil! (Haha)

TeaLady441 said

Hahaha. Sneaky!

Also Lala, good luck!! I went 13 days but I’m breaking my hiatus bc of that Tazo sale. 13 days is pretty good though. I’m getting better!

darby select said

Super Bonus: if goals are all met, reward yourself with tea!

Sil select said

Cavo….haven’t ordered yet! So keep counting lol

TeaLady441 said

Will do. Also, will NOT buy from A&D just because I’m excitedly in love with Mount Grey. Will NOT! I’m sure I can wait until Black Friday for that… (And then I’ll be at my new place so I’ll have room for all my tins…. hopefully)

Lala said

Well I have about 9 hours to go to achieve Goal 1. And now Della Terra is having a sale on root beer float. I am just gonna put my nose down and bite my tongue, hide my wallet, and try not to buy more tea. Where is Will Power when you need him!

TeaLady441 said

You can do it Lala! I’m sure with all those orders you just placed that there is something you’ll enjoy as much or more than you would the Root Beer. And, if you wait a few weeks, maybe you’ll be able to swap for a bit of it? By then you’ll be halfway to goal 2!

Lala said

Well managed to complete goal 1. Ha ha. I feel like I should get to celebrate and buy more tea. Don’t worry though. I’m being good. Took stock of all of my opened, but still packed, boxes of tea and feel a bit guilty. That should keep me off ordering for a while.

Sooo I bought tea from verdant today but as long as i get to 200 teas by july 1st then i won’t count this as a strike on my tea buying hiatus because it would have been one of my birthday orders anyway, and won’t arrive here until July in any case. This just means i HAVE to get to 200 by the end of June. back to drinking!

Sounds like a rationalization to me! I’m not judgin’, just sayin’… Heh!

Sil select said

SHUSH! it’s my birthday order i can do what i want! :)

also terri…i’m the one talking us out of the other NON birthday order grin bills to pay!

Hahahah, it feels so good too be bad
