I’m attempting a tea buying hiatus. Attempting is key. Mandala is coming out with a pu’er that tastes like chocolate called Special Dark. How am I to resist that? I mean even the name sounds tasty. There are also some other pu’ers from Mandala that I want to try. It would be better if I didn’t love pu’er so much. And, to make it worse, I’ve loved all of the teas I bought from Butiki and I am already obsessed with buying more. I think I have the sickness, my friends.

Hmmmm…..I probably should be avoiding the Mandala page….

graceatblb said

I tried parental controlling it but I am powerless when it comes to Mandala. A weakling.

Sil select said

oh no grace…don’t take me down your puerh path! lol I totally want to check that one out now..esp knowing i’ve got a few mandala things coming from you. My swap partners keep driving me to order from companies that up until that point i was ok waiting until it came up on my list! Terri made me get A&D and i’m also looking at a couple others….Tastybrew has me going to american tea room…and there have been others… bah! lol

graceatblb said

The package went out this morning! I really hope you like the pu’ers I sent. I sent 3 of my favorites. One is a bit off the board and wonky though but I loved it.

I hope I can return the favor because I ordered from Butiki because I loved the Ruby Pie sample you sent me :) I’m hoarding the last bit like a crazy person. I do fangirl Mandala just a little bit and the pu’er path is quite dangerous. I’m already itching to buy more.

American Tea Room has been on my list for a while especially their 1992 pu’er and Toasted Fig. I’m such a weaking.

I have a ton of puer, which I love but haven’t been drinking as much lately, & every time I read about one, I want to order it!

Sil select said

uh oh… there’s a puerh from American tea room i need to try? crap lol. Samples is it! As for Ruby Pie, it will be coming out in relatively short order i think? Stacy is tweaking the blend a little based on additional feedback from steepsterites that I shared it with. I also still have about 3oz left, so i can always send more your way, then you don’t have to hoard lol

cough 12$ puerh sample…

graceatblb said

American Tea Room has 3 pu’ers I want to try and their black tea blends sound lovely. It’s probably bad that I’d be willing to spend the 42 dollars for 2oz of the 92 pu’er? But I won’t. But I want to.

Ruby Pie is always welcome in my cupboard :) But I think I’d hoard it anyway!

I’ve got to stop getting anymore tea. I found steepster when I was looking online for David’s Tea reviews. I too started getting way too many teas in 100g tins/bags to try, now I know better. Unfortunately I wanted to try all sorts of flavoured teas, now I want to try all sorts of straight teas plus steepster has opened up the whole online tea world to me! I must not order/or buy anymore until I finish some of my growing supply!

Sil select said

trade, trade and trade! if you have lots of 100g teags, maybe try swapping them out to get back smaller samples of other teas :)

Uniquity said

I also bought everything in 100 grams at first. D’oh. At least we have tins!

Welcome, you’re in the right place…sort of…
At least we all recognize our need to abstain from purchases…
;)

TeaLady441 said

I’m with Sil! Trade those teas up for something you’re excited to try. You’re not buying anything that way, but then you can try the unflavoured teas you’re curious about!

Nitoo6of6 said

Great idea…been trying that with co-workers and family:). I unfortunately or actually fortunately placed a sizeable order with Butiki on the weekend for my niece and I so hopefully I have enough to try in the next few weeks to keep me happy:)

What’s with all of these spring/earth day sales?!? Argh!

Uniquity said

Save the planet, buy more stuff! :)

Not really helping, is it… >_<

Lala said

But if I can save the planet by buying tea…

TeaLady441 said

NOooo! Stay strong!
(Easy for me to say – none of the sales have really caught my attention…)

That’s right! One can help the Earth other ways!

I WILL RESIST THE EARTH DAY SALES!

I successfully resisted the Earth day sales!
Who else succeeded? Together we are stronger, right? LOL

It’s not over, everyone. We will prevail!

Sil select said

uh does it count if i resisted earth day sales but straight up bought two tea tins because of lala! lol

Lala said

Ha ha sil. Doesn’t sound like I am really helping out on this thread.

Should we make it count? I think tins are OK, unless they’re filled with tea.

Sil select said

lol oh they’re filled with tea…though it’s sachets not loose tea…

I kind of think that all teas & related paraphernalia count… not judging, just say :)

At first I was like: ಠ_ಠ

But then I was like: http://clipartist.info/RSS/png/okay_face_untitled_1-1979px.png

I love that! :)
Just remember, nobody put me in charge! LOL

Nitoo6of6 said

Sales?!? Just kidding I am not even going to look!

yyz said

not a sale and not just for earth day, but Mountain tea has partnered with Trees for the future and is planting one tree for every product sold on their website.

Nitoo6of6 said

That sounds like a pretty cool partnership! Has anyone had their stuff shipped to Canada? I’ve had a really nice oolong of theirs given to me by a coworker a couple of years back….Must resist the temptation though!

yyz said

The last time I bought from them, was before the price increase at USPS. I’m not sure how or if their shipping rates changed. At that time shipping was $5.00 to Canada. Has anyone in Canada bought from them recently?

TeaLady441 said

Yikes! Red Leafs Matchaccino sale, with free shipping to Canada, is why I have a hard time going a week without buying tea! Not sure I can resist as this is more a one time only sale…

Dexter said

I know, need to find an address to send it to, but I don’t think I can pass this up either.

While I did buy two tins of tea today….one is being returned tomorrow AND I successfully managed to NOT place an order tonight with American tea room. Baby steps……

What did you buy & why are you returning one?
You know we really need to know these things Sil…

Sil select said

Lol the sloane tea I bought….they don’t advertise anywhere that its got bergamot in it shudder but it does….it’ll probably be an exchange though for the chocolat truffle tea….or peaches and cream… Probably chocolate truffle since it has the black base…but Lala says the white ones is good…sooooo maybe ill end up with both for fun lol. It’s sachets so I always feel like I can blow through those super fast…

It baby steps work for you better than cold turkey, go for it.

Both of those teas sound YUM!

I’m really trying to make this tea buying hiatus work, but all these companies seem to be coming out with various discounts… D:
Hopefully by the end of the summer I’ll have gone through enough teas in my stash so I can buy more teas.

It doesn’t help that three quarters of my tea collection is in another state. >.> I’ll be reunited with it in a few weeks, though. :)

Janefan said

I unsubscribed to all threads about sales, and even unsubscribed to newsletters and “unliked” FB pages to keep from being tempted by sales (52teas was esp. hard). I only caved once, for the DoMatcha packets which had been out of stock for 2 years. And matcha is practically health food, in my book.

Uniquity said

Unsubscribing from newsletters really helps (if you’re trying not to be tempted). I don’t get any tea newsletters anymore, though Steepster can be tempting enough. Canadian shipping usually works as a deterrent though.

Ag select said

I unsubscribed to most newsletters and Twitter/Facebook pages, but there were a handful that I kept around. I may have to just unsubscribe from those, too.

How’s everyone holding up? I thing I’m on day 11… :)

TeaLady441 said

I was sorta doing ok, but the day we all started the hiatus I placed an order with Bluebird, and then on the 23rd I bought the Matchacinno because I didn’t think Red Leaf would ever offer free shipping to Canada. :|

I also bought my Mom a 4 month subscription to Amoda for Mother’s Day, but I don’t think that counts because it’s a gift.

I have avoided buying other things that I normally would, so I guess I’m cutting down, even if I am working with Sil and OMGSrsly on future group orders… But I’ve walked by DavidsTea multiple times without even glancing in!

Sil select said

Uh..I’m on hour 8?

Day 16. I almost made a purchase, but the company uses PayPal (don’t have).

Lala said

Woot! Stay strong everyone. You all give me hope :)

Nitoo6of6 said

So far so good day 10

Dinosara said

Haha I think I am at a day and a half. But that was my birthday Verdant order, which I had been planning to make anyway, so it wasn’t an impulse buy.

Anyanka said

Day 3! (I’ve had to restart a few times.)

Ag select said

Day 29, or something close to that. I almost made a Verdant order last night when I saw that there was a coupon. I’m not sure what happened except that I closed the page before I entered my credit card info and went to eat some ice cream instead. xD

Keep up the great work, everyone!
Something that may be helpful for people who order from Adagio (which I do, occasionally):
http://www.adagio.com/pages/self_ban.html

You can set a self-ban from Adagio for up to one week. Unfortunately, you can also bypass the ban by posting on Facebook, it seems, but I haven’t used that option so I don’t know if it really works.

I Love you guys!! Group Hug!!
:D

I think I said I would stop buying tea for the whole month of May, so I guess that means I start tomorrow? Is tomorrow the first? I have no concept of time. Either tomorrow or the next day I suppose. :)

the only thing is I can’t really tell my hubby this plan because if I break my word (only due to some unexpected and unbelievable deal, of course!) I will never hear the end.

But if I say it in here, it counts, right!? Here’s me, being accountable….

Sil select said

whatshesaid – that too is my plan for May. The only exception that i’m allowed is the steap shoppe order that i will be placing. Everything else is off the table until June or if i somehow magically drink my cupboard down to 100 teas. That would be an acceptable celebration too…not that it’s going to happen lol

Dinosara said

I can’t make any May purchases because I won’t be getting a paycheck in June! (I’ll have a month between the last paycheck of my current position and before the first paycheck of my next job)

Dr Jim said

I managed the month of April with only one cheat (the 5 for $5 from Verdant was too good to miss). Now it is May so I just placed my one-a-month order at Upton. I bought samples, which I hope will last me well into June.

Frank re-blended a bunch of stuff and its taking everything in me not to buy all of them. Heeeeeeeeeelp. D:

Fiddling said

I’m having the same issue right now! I don’t want to break my nearly one month long buying hiatus, even if Lemon Meringue Chai and Pina Colada Honeybush are calling my name. I’m trying to remind myself that I recently bought three of Frank’s new creations/reblends on impluse, and I need to finish those first before buying more.

Sil select said

i want….sigh must. not. buy.

Ohnowhy ._.

Dustin said

I just had three in my cart and when I added a fourth it said one that I had already put in my cart was sold out. It was frustrating enough that I quit. I don’t need more tea. I don’t need more tea. I don’t need more tea…. right?

Dustin said

Wow. I think pouting worked. That tea is back in stock and I expect to be four teas heavier soon. Time to reset my hiatus clock. I justified it by thinking I needed something to look forward to while recovering from sinus surgery. Hopefully it will go well and I’ll actually be able to taste the teas. If I can’t then I guess it’s some sort of karmatic justice. I think I just made that word up, “karmatic”.

@Dustin, sorry to be an enabler. …Okay, maybe I’m not really. I am sorry that the system informed you that an item sold out that was in your cart. Ideally, our cart would handle that a little better, but I guess other options might really make a mess of the inventory—some orders sit in limbo forever…

Dustin said

And here I thought you were working behind the curtains helping me stick to my hiatus by taking items out of my basket as I put them in! :P

Back to pay my penance. Damn free shipping!

:(

lol, it’s OK :3 What did you buy? I was tempted to try out Fig Rose.

Lala said

I stocked up on Spiced Mandarin oolong (because it is delicious!) and I wanted to try Dragonfruit Devotion (because it has dragonfruit in it) :) I had wanted to put an order in but was waiting until I had a big list, then there was a sale… I have never tried the fig rose but it looks good.

Fig Rose???
Who makes that?

Lala said

Teavana

Sil select said

lala! stop spreading your madness! lol

Lala said

Sil- I can’t help it. Well actually I can help it, I am a corruptive enabler I guess :P

Lynxiebrat said

I adore Dragonfruit Devotion! I’ve been hoarding it these last few weeks because I most likely won’t be able to tea shop til Mid/late June. The Fig Rose is lovely with the Strawberry Rose Champagne, which I had gotten again specifically to blend with the Fig Rose.

It’s been…. 5 minutes since my last purchase. /0\

I just bought two blends from 52 Teas, but I won’t say what because I don’t want to inspire others to follow me.

Ok… New promise to myself – besides the order with Sil, and the one with OMGSrsly which I’ve committed myself too, no more purchases for May! Or at least until the 13th when I go back to work. I might allow one then as a reward/stress-relief thing.

Unless… only unless there’s a sale on something that is super rare and unlikely to happen again (like A&D’s free shipping to Canada).

Ha. I’m not very good at this.

Emily M said

52 Teas always seems to get me off track, too… I just don’t want to miss out!
Stay strong, Cavocorax! You can do it!

Dustin said

That is a good idea to do it month by month, or even week by week for those of us who are, uh… weak. Sometimes if you don’t set your goal too far down, it’s easier to make and keep going for another short stretch.
