Traveling to England...need help!

My husband and I are going on a trip to England at the end of June. We are flying into Birmingham and then staying in Cheltenham. Does anyone have any advice on what we should do while we’re there? We are planning on renting bicycles and riding through the Cotswolds but that’s about all we have planned. We’ll be there for 7 days. I can’t seem to find anyone that has been to that region so I thought I would ask my fellow Steepsters!

Birmingham is known for it’s shopping centres with my personal favourite being the Bullring. http://www.bullring.co.uk/

As for Cheltenhnam I have never visited but I do know they have gorgeous countryside and would be perfect to do some nature trails and walks.

I hope you have a nice time :)

I’ve been there! I couldn’t afford a thing in the bullring, but I liked the swap meet/ flea market happening outside — much more in my price range at that time (broke college student).

Thank you very much. Do you know anything about the train system? We will need to take a train to get to Cheltenham, my husband doesn’t want to drive on the “wrong” side of the road!

Birmingham has one of the largest train stations in the UK, it has two main stations (one on each end of the city). If your after times and could do with a little help navigating your way there then The Trainline could help. Can book tickets, see train times, etc :)

Not sure about the station in Cheltenham but the site may be able to help. It should have the full addresses of the stations for you.

I don’t really know anything about Cheltenham…but I’ve been to London a few times and I’m planning our honeymoon trip to London and Paris right now! We’ll be going in October. Can’t wait!!!

There’s tons of awesome stuff to see outside of London: Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, Windsor, Stonehenge, and Glastonbury seem like some of the best places to sightsee. Good luck on your trip!

Birmingham has lots to do, depending on what kind of thing you like. A couple of ones I’d suggest are:
A canal tour

Birmingham museum and art gallery

Both of these are easily accessed from Birmingham New Street state, which is one stop on the train from Birmingham International Airport station.

I don’t know Cheltenham, but you’ll only be a short train journey from Oxford, which is well worth a day walking around. You’re also only a short train journey from Cardiff, which has:

(Disclaimer that the company I work for works with them, so I’m biased – but they’re great people :) ).

Thank you! I think we will go to Oxford for a day!

Cheltenham is a beautiful old regency town with amazing grand buildings etc. Gloucester (just down the road) is also well worth a visit to go and see the quay (which also has a very nice shopping centre near). Lots of nice countryside around there to cycle in too. You could probably do a really nice ride up through the vale of Evesham to Stratford on Avon then get the train back.

I didn’t think about taking a train back, that’s a good idea. We were planning on bicycling through the Cotswolds.
