Going grandpa style at work this morning. 4 grams of 2015 W2T Little Walk in an 8oz coffee cup. A little bitter, a little sweet and good sheng flavor. A nice soft way to ease into the day. :)

some chawangshop very cheap shengs:

‘09 yun chun jinggu yang ta ’da bai hao’ sheng. Its ok but boring, can taste some storage-y flavours but not too strong. might be better if my house clears it a bit and I can push out flavours, idk. It has some ok mouthfeel for it, little bit lush, but taste is lacking.

’09 Jinfu Jingmai Qiao Mu Zhuan – I like this one more. Need to investigate for proper review.

‘14 Jingmai Gu Shu Huang Pian – meh, wtf. Was hoping to score some cheap leaf which might suffice but there is something very ’large pile of steaming grass left in the sun’ about it. Need to check parameters and investigate

these are all in the $15-20 for 250g range though, so its fun

Also the 2017 He Tao Di is supposed to be even nicer. You totally cannot go wrong with a sample of those three and see how you go – the Da Qing has a bit of everything in it.

In non-puerh teas I like Lang jings, oolongs and particularly keemun.

I love the fact that they are exceptionally thirst quenching, like water – only wetter.

I have a pot of Formosa Oolong next to me just now, but am away from home at work in Angola and I’m down to the dust with this one – still better than none eh?

Just had a batch of teas delivered to my home in UK, can’t wait to get back. I ordered one ripe and one raw puerh cake – completely without knowledge or guidance, will find the names and let you know. If they are no good I still have very good loose leaf teas to last whilst I try again.

Three weeks to go and only three days tea left…..

There is probably an aged puer out there that’s keemun-like; I don’t know of an example, but maybe someone else can provide one.

Also ripes that are classic good flavour are the song of chi tse, and golden lily white lotus. Although the latter might get faked, so beware. Berylleb King tea is a legitimate vendor for these on eBay.

one raw 2007 one ripe 2012.

Not a good idea to start your puerh journey with unknown cakes. Best to spend an year or two sampling small amounts of a variety of puerh, ranging from cheap to costly, factory teas to boutique teas, and from young to aged before you buy the next large cake.

The teas you bought may well be fine, it is just that once you refine your taste – you will be in a better position to pick and choose more wisely as to what would be ideal for you to drink in bulk in the long term. Others here more experienced than me can probably assist you in shortlisting what to try from various vendors.

This afternoon I’m drinking 2013 Yunnan Sourcing Autumn Ye Sheng at a ratio of 1:20, 212F water, in yixing. I lost count of the steeps but it’s something like: 10sec/10,10,10,10,10,15….

The soup has a nice silky texture that is nice to roll around in the mouth. The first steeps have a light-medium bitter that starts receding after 5 or so steeps but hasn’t completely gone away. The bitter is matched by a more pronounced dried fruit/light chocolate sweetness, that isn’t overbearing. The bitter and sweet are tied together with an interesting smoke that I can’t quite peg. I’m not a big lover of smoke in my sheng but I do like peated scotches, and I like this flavor. The closest I can imagine is a mixture of light peat smoke and campfire smoke. The energy off this is calming with no negative body feels.

EDIT: It’s been 11 minutes since I posted this and now I’m feeling quite drunk :) I looked this one up and discovered it was a purple tea. I was sure I hated purple tea. ;)

Ah no, the ye sheng can be good stuff – if this is the one that is sold out I really liked it too.

Also zi hong pao purple dhp is an worth a try if you like oolong

Yep, it’s the one that sold out :( I had tried around 5 purples before and each one I didn’t like, so I came to the conclusion there was something about purples…

I looked at some of the other ye sheng Scott has but none of them mentioned the peat smell/taste that the 2013 Autumn has. I think that’s the main reason I dig it. I’ll have to go back to the other samples of purple I have and retry them ;)

I tried an oolong from Everlasting Teas. It’s called Aged Bao Zhong. The label says harvest date was 1975. I have no idea if that’s good stuff or not. Anyway, I liked how it tasted but IIRC I got a negative caffeine buzz from it. I have issues with caffeine but for some reason puers I can handle, if I don’t completely overdo it.

That’s interesting, I am sensitive too. I find oolong easier than lots of sheng, which can affect me physically quite strongly. I do drink too much though, it’s no wonder

2014 New Amerikah w2t— this is the first of theirs I’ve tried. It’s good tea. All the rest is reaction. It’s an interesting blend. The aroma is very fruity and playful, so is the thick brew, and its taste. I’ve done three pots and can’t do any more. My stomach is really feeling this one more than any I think I’ve ever tried. Very bloaty feeling with gurgling. You can tell it’s heavy on the Yiwu material, the astringency lingers in the mouth for a good spell, but not with much of any other taste. Perfect for warm weather, with the right ratios perfect for a sheng coldbrew just by itself.
