pu-erh of the day. Sheng or Shou
Not a specific pu note – but I wanted to say that all y’all and your awesome sheng talk lately have inspired me to spend some quality time with my gaiwan. It’s gonna be a sheng weekend. Also looks like I’m going to have to spend some time on the YS Chinese site as well.
I think I will be checking out the YS site (US one). Mrmopar sent me a link and now I’m curious.
Today I’m enjoying 2012 Mandala Silver Buds Raw. The lightness of white tea with the pu-er kick. I love that I can brew it at high temperatures. I’m enjoying it so far.
The US site apparently has faster shipping, but some of the things I really want are only on the Chinese site. So as much as “instant gratification” are two of my favorite words, I’m gonna wait and get the ones I want.
The things I want most right now are the 2008 Menghai “Springtime Water”, the Dream of the Red Chamber and the Big Snow Mountain one (although I think that one is on the US site).
The one that Roughage was discussing: 2004 Hai Lang Hao “Big Snow Mountain” It sounds really good to me
Yeah there’s a lot going in mine too. I’m gonna have to start using your “WHAT? This old thing?” Cause I’m starting to get the stink eye.
YS China is actually pretty speedy with EMS service. The extra shipping cost is worth it.
I agree. Go for the EMS service. It is quick and worth the extra cost. So wonderful, YS and quick delivery!
So I’m drinking this…Nan-jian Phoenix Six Great Tea Mountains Wild Tea Reaching Reverence 2009. Has a brassy clear liquor and the smell is of vanilla and sweet smelling flowers. But I can’t taste any of that. Slight astringency with the first few infusions. Wife said it has a fruity taste. Brewed, the leaves also take on a brassy hue. I had it sitting in a zisha caddy for two mths. Still undecided. Wife doesn’t like and requested Bow Village.
Had some nice random 2008 Shen today, from ChungMing. I really like their elephant logo: http://farm1.staticflickr.com/43/125066485_d0052fcff3_o.jpg
Yunnan Sourcing 2012 “Impression” cake, remembering why I loved this one, big, thick, sweet and smooth, tasty, accessible, and dirt cheap.
I’m trying my little jasmine raw pu’er bowls this morning (from Royal Tea Bay). I used boiling water (like they said to use on the website) but I didn’t brew 1-2 min. Only 20 sec. It was so bitter I couldn’t drink it. I threw it out and lowered the temperature to 190 and only brewed 10 sec. Better but I’m not getting a full pu-er taste and the jasmine seems to be lost. I think this one takes a lot of messing around with the temperature and brew times. I wonder why there’s no year on the mini cakes? Does that mean they are really new – 2014?
I’m having my usual Special Dark and contemplating sheng day. I’m realizing I don’t have enough shengs – hence my impending YS order. I’m for sure getting these: 2008 Menghai “Springtime Water”, the Dream of the Red Chamber and 2004 Hai Lang Hao “Big Snow Mountain”. Any other suggestions for YS while I’m at it?
Oh you’ve been busy! I got my YS cart too full and need to remove lots. Got carried away. lol Also need to keep it all sample size. I’m just so new to sheng. Wish I had a yixing teapot.
Hi everyone, I just thought I’d share the following with you guys. Seems interesting.
I’ve sampled once from their puerh selection. I wasn’t too impressed. They are great for teaware, though.
I would like it if they had a picture of the used/wet leaves. Often I use that more as the guide for online shopping.
Heaven Earth and Man: Wild Tall Tree 2005 This is the most unique tea I’ve ever had. Have you ever tasted banana or jackfruit in your pu’er before? There’s also sour. Hand-pressed. Big wild looking leaves with stems. Faint dry wood or hay flavours as well. Broth goes from pallid to yellow, stunning clarity. It very much possesses a warm forest vibe, even though they remark that it’s been selected from high mountains.
I got it on alibaba. A patient today tasted it and said papaya because of the aftertaste. Later infusions are unmistakably sour, maybe like a sour apple.
Sheng!! Canton Raw: Jing Gu 2011 by Canton Tea Co —Blue poppy seed, smoke, cream, vanilla, white raspberry, mulberry, sweet tobacco are all notes I have tasted :)
Cool thread!!!
I have a Moonlight White from Jing-gu but don’t think I’ve tried anything else from that region yet. I could be mistaken.
I found that this county was well known for its Da Bai/Big White and I love those flavors. This is my first cake and I really like it :) Gotta keep learning from you guys here :)
Maybe that’s how I ended up with Moonlight White/bai. Look forward to learning from you.
Hi Lee! Welcome to the thread. And nice notes, I never thought of blue poppy seeds, now I’ll have to go to the market and try them! I love how different people have different descriptions for the same taste yet they make sense!
Thanks JC!! I do a ton of cooking so I have so many spices and the teas always have notes of herbs and spices in them to me. I’ll always go,,,wait a minute,,,where have I tasted or smelled that before and I’ll find it in my spices usually.
That’s great! I believe that tea triggers all my food related memories as well. Sometimes it ‘messes’ with me in the sense of trying different teas and tasting traits of chocolate in them but they are essentially different in taste. Tea is awesome.
Yes it is!!!! I love it!! I love chocolate notes in tea! I like to see if the teas will pair with foods too,,,usually do that with green teas.
Nice! I haven’t ventured so far as to pair with food. I drink tea by itself. I do enjoy Japanese green with food. I feel like their savory notes and the astringency it naturally has goes well with food. And a strong Sheng for greasy food. I bought a book about Cooking and tea, so maybe I’ll get into that sometime.
Wow, that’s a lot of flavours in there. I’m not sure I would recognise those blue poppy seed if it bit me on the nose!
I have had great service from Canton and they got me started on the proper tea trail.
Yes! The seeds have a “bread” and “hempy” sweet note. I think that’s why they go so well in muffins :)
I love Canton!! They have lots of unique things and the tea is fresh.
