The few times I’ve tried any smoky teas, I’ve gotten a mild headache.

On several occasions I have had a bad sore throat after drinking Rooibos. I researched it on line and found that many people claim that Rooibos has an antihistamine effect. Since antihistamines have also given me a sore throat (they stop the runny nose by causing post-nasal drip) I concluded that there may be something to the antihistamine effect, but that it means I can’t drink Rooibos

Yes! I get a scratchy throat from some rooibos. It’s unpleasant.

Speaking of teas and headaches, I have a question for you guys!

If I have a headache – is it because I’m dehydrated due to too much tea, or is it caffeine withdrawal because I haven’t had enough? What do I do? :O (I’ve been alternating cups of water and tea to cover both bases…)

Mint tea might help. Hydrating and theoretically helps open the blood vessels to increase blood flow or something like that.

I’ve run into that problem too… when I haven’t been drinking as much tea, I get a headache. I wasn’t sure whether it was caffeine withdrawal or dehydration (given that tea is the source of most of my hydration) so I went with juices + some tea. The one time I tried only non-tea beverages, it didn’t seem to help, so I’d definitely include a bit of tea…

I have this problem as well, but I’ve found that my headaches tend to be caused by a sensitivity to some of the flavorings different companies use. I started keeping better track of what I was drinking prior to the headaches coming on and noticed a trend with certain flavored teas.

That’s a good point too – I’ll try to keep track! (which should be easy if I’m logging everything here anyway)

Plain rooibos late at night gives me headaches, and certain teas that are “heavy,” creamy, or buttery make me feel nauseated when the weather is very warm.

One tea (or one element of a particular herbal tea) makes the roof of my mouth itch. It must be some sort of allergy, but I haven’t isolated exactly what does this yet.

I have read that if someone has an allergy to the ragweed family of pollen, she needs to be extra careful about ingredients in tea blends. Cross reactions can occur:

Lately I’ve found that tea with rose petals in it makes me vaguely ill feeling and gives me a mild headache.
Not to mention anything with mango in it sets my oral allergies off. Which kinda blows ‘cause alot of the teas that I’ve been interested in lately seem to have mango in it. Lol.

Certain flavored teas set off my migraines and one of the worst offenders happened to be one I was looking forward to. DAVIDsTEA’s hot buttered rum set off possibly one of the worst migraines I’ve ever had. I wish companies would go into more detail about what they use to flavor their teas so I could better determine what exactly I need to stay away from.

Other than that, I have to be careful about anything that uses cinnamon, especially if I can’t easily determine the origin on the cinnamon. For the longest time I thought that I was allergic to cinnamon, it gave me terrible hives most of the time I consumed it, but I read an article on An Organic Wife called Is Your Cinnamon Fake? It was a real eye opener and explained why I didn’t always have problems eating/drinking cinnamon. I didn’t realize there were two types of cinnamon. Turns out that my son and I are both allergic to Cassia Cinnamon, which tends to be used more because it is cheaper. I don’t have a problem with Ceylon cinnamon, so if the origin on the cinnamon used is Sri Lanka I know that I’m probably safe to eat/drink it. This news was awesome because now I can make carrot cake again, I’ve missed it.

You can check out the article if you’re interested, it’s a really interesting read. http://www.anorganicwife.com/2013/02/is-your-cinnamon-fake.html

Mate teas make me very ill.
I love the taste of them, but every one I have tried makes me sick:(
Also, if I drink too much assam on an empty stomach, I get a little queasy.

Honeybush gives me a terrible headache and nausea. I think I might be starting to develop it with rooibos too (I heard somewhere that they’re related?) So I decided to claim allergy and stop drinking it entirely, the honeybush that is.
