"Tea" V and other movie references
Thinking that collectively, it is possible to create an entire media anthology with tea references. For instance, in “House M.D.” the team room has a shelf with various teas. I have recognized boxes from Stash and Bigelow on said shelf, and now make it a point to pause DVD to analyze its contents. Can’t tell which of the characters is the tea drinker, however. Hugh Laurie always has coffee.
That’s somewhat scary and somewhat awesome that you picked up on that. Haha, I’ll keep an eye out next time I watch.
On George Lopez, there are always teapots in the kitchen, sometimes as many as three, but they make a pot of tea from one teabag. Go figure that one.
Tea is big in Science Fiction. We all know about Captain Picard and his Earl Grey, but do you know about Inara, the companion in Firefly, who performs the companion welcoming ceremony with a Chinese tea set? There is of course the Hitchhiker’s Guide with the almost exactly not quite like a nice hot cup of tea. The same author wrote The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul.
On Castle recently some police officers were served tea by a little old lady they came to investigate. That’s not science fiction, but is stars Nathan Fillion from Firefly.
I would love to write for tv. I would have a show where the kind of tea the characters drank indicated aspects of their characters. I’d call it The Tea Time Murders and the detective would be a woman who ran a tea shop and read tea leaves. She would know when someone was going to die, but not when or where.
HAH! That’s fantastic! Can’t say I ever noticed that. Now I’m not going to be able to pay attention to anything else during those diagnostic whiteboard scenes.
Two of my favorite shows, Firefly and Avatar: the Last Airbender [both finished], reference tea. In both instances they use loose leaf and are independent of brand.
No other ones come to mind. A lot of shows seem to use coffee more than tea, though now that tea is becoming more “hip,” perhaps we’ll begin to see it surface more in popular media. Which is a neat thought.
Did you cry during the episode where Iroh goes on a picnic and sings a lullabye to his son who had been killed years before? (These days, all you have to do is look at me sideways and I tear up…) If I can sneak my son’s Firefly set out of his room, I’ll have to re-watch.
I’m to the point where all I need to do is think about that bit and I tear up. I think they won an award for that episode, or at least got nominated, and rightly so.
The first time I saw it I was a hot mess. Did the ugly cry and everything.
I was watching one of the NCIS shows the other day and a crazy little old lady was preaching about loose leaf. The best was that by the end of the episode the main character had made the switch not only from coffee but to loose leaf.
That, and Star Trek.
Nah, I thought he was drinking tea, but it was from a bag. She asked him “can’t you taste the paper?” and at the end he admitted that he had started tasting the paper.
That was NCIS: LA – a very funny sequence. Hettie is very energetically trying to convert Sam to tea drinking, but he doesn’t like it because it tasted moldy. Then later she has a cup herself, and discovers that … it’s moldy!
Did anyone catch the premiere of ‘V’? In one scene, a couple of the characters were at a cafe and I couldn’t stop staring at the giant red tea tins. Here’s a still:

In the show they’re supposed to be in New York, but that doesn’t look like anything I know from New York, so I’m thinking it’s wherever they filmed it. Look familiar to anyone?

Hah! I noticed that too, though for some reason I thought they were coffee canisters. Whatever they were, the building was gorgeous.
The pilot was absolutely crazy-go-nuts. I feel like they’re pushing the season along a little fast as opposed to letting things simmer a bit, but I’ve got faith in a lot of the actors on the series so I’ll likely continue watching it. Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk FTW.

Right now Scrubbing Bubbles Radio Spots mention “Oolong Tea”…lol…
I’m playing the second installment of the Professor Layton games for the DS right now and there’s a whole little side quest section on tea. They keep talking about how great tea is and you get things to blend your own tea with. It’s pretty fantastic. Every time it comes up in the game I think about Steepster. Then I inevitably log into Steepster. It’s a vicious little sequence, really.
Hmm…will have to consult with my in-house teen and see if he’s played/encountered this.
Argh why did you go and post this? Now you made me go and look it up and spend far too many tries on a demo puzzle about which way the images on a cube should go and it was ruddy hard! O.o
Both the books and the TV series “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” include drinking “bush tea” quite often. They are, of course, referring to Rooibos tea. Several of the books in the series comment on the preparation and comfort that the tea brings. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is a series aired on HBO…about to start its second season. I highly recommend the books and the TV series.
Usually I cringe at the made-for-TV versions, but I wondered about this one since I’m a huge Precious Ramotswe fan. (Love the title of #8: “Tea Time for the Traditionally Built.”) We don’t HBO at our house … are they out on DVD, by any chance?
I’m watching Hitch before bed drinking a matcha lemon-limeade and Hitch picks breakfast up for his girlfriend and said "I don’t know what you drink so I got a “decaf latte, an Earl Grey Tea, and something with chai in the title”.
The main character of the show The Mentalist is obsessed with tea! He probably drinks a cup every episode!

And Avatar the Last Air Bender, at least the cartoon, there are many references to tea. They drink a lot of it, at least the Uncle.
