Fruit in tea

Hi all, I’d like to ask a question.

I am interested in brewing some fruit with my teas to make my own blends of herbal teas at home. Do I need to use dried, or dehydrated fruit pieces?

Also, does anyone know where I can get the correct fruit? All I have seen online are herbal fruit medleys, which I’m not interested in as I’d like to experiment by single fruits. Also, many of the medleys contain added ‘natural flavors’, and I’m not sure what that is.

Thanks so much!

If you ever figure it out, I would love to know what a blood orange/mango blend would taste like. Maybe in an oolong or white tea?

Actually, when tea blends have dried fruit bits in them, those bits tend to provide very little of the flavouring. By far the most of the flavouring comes from added flavours and aromas. The fruit bits are largely ornamental.

Really. I see. I did think that the fruit bits provided more body and a richer mouthfeel. I liked that a lot. I can see how a lot of the flavor came from the added flavors.

In any case, I’d still like to give brewing with fruit pieces a whirl. Very curious to see the effect sans added flavors :)

If you are looking for specific fruits, you could always dehydrate your own. Food dehydrators are pretty cheap and it’s easy – just time consuming.
You can also get quite a few dried fruits in health food stores- watch ingredients that there aren’t added sugars/preservatives etc.
There is nothing stopping you from adding fresh fruit to your tea. I’ve never really done it (ok tamarind once – but that’s another story), but it’s your tea – do with it as you please.
I’m agreeing with Angrboda – you aren’t going to get a lot of flavor from just adding dried fruit pieces to your tea – fruit tisanes normally have flavoring added to them.

I got a dehydrator last week and I’ve been having fun with it. So far I’ve only used dehydrated oranges in my tea, and with good results :) As far as fresh fruits go, I’ve made really tasty cinnamon-apple tea with one whole apple, a cinnamon stick and 16 ounces of water. I also threw some fresh kiwi slices in my tea once and that was absolutely disgusting, so you just have to experiment.
