tea tasting party - do you do it?

On Saturday, I got invited to my FIRST tea party. a friend’s friend’s friend visiting from Beijing offered an elaborate tea tasting with four of us…ranging from anji white tea, wuyuan red, to alishan Tieguanying, yunnan puerh, and a rougui that grew in rock soil…man, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Does anyone else do or attend tea-tasting parties? I wish I could post a series of pictures here…i posted them on my instagram and twitter…I think it’s fun to do tea-tasting parties, peaceful and very civilized

Sounds like a Wonderful time. I dont have any serious tea friends. I wish I did!
Most of my crowd isnt even interested in tea.
But there have been a couple of people at work who show some mild interest. I do share but I dont know enough to have a party and feel like I could do it well.

I kinda laughed out loud when I saw this post because dang, I wish I was there!
I’ve been to a tea party before. Well, a fail of a tea party. It was last summer and we had a very wide selection of tea, ranging from Celestial Seasonings to Lipton (and yes, I say that sarcastically). I brought a selection of (-my oldest and cheapest-) 10 teas with me and none of my friends even knew that loose leaf was a thing.
It was also very hot when we had our get together so it ended up being “lets hang out for a couple hours and take Kyra’s tea home” type of party.

Yeah, none of my friends are into tea at all. If I do get the chance to have a nice party with friends who are at least willing to learn about all things tea, then I’d definitely hop on that chance!

But it does seem like you had a very nice time and I’m very jealous :)

Oh I feel for you! The reaction I get at work is usually “why bother? just use a tea bag with water from the coffee dispenser!”

@lingonsf – you are a lucky man!

haha, that’s funny. So people brought all kinds of tea in tea bags?!

Yep! We got a nice selection of fannings and dust from Lipton, Celestial Seasonings and I believe Bigelow was another one that people brought. I came armed with disposable sachets and infusers and strainers and they just stared at me like I came from another planet haha.

Seriously. Cherish your tea party with actual tea. Your experience was tons better than mine!

Hi Kyra, just clicked your tumblr page, so cool. afternoon partea LOL. btw, the pouring tea image is so awesome. is it a GIF?

Oh wow, yeah, that’s just a sideblog that my sister and I run and I keep forgetting that’s a thing that exists!
That is a gif. I didn’t make it though, the original post should be in the credits bit of the sidebar :)

but seriously, still so many people are not seeing teas in its natural form, i and another Chinese guy steep green tea in our uni-brew tea mug in the office, dang…but I stopped by DAVIDsTea on Sat., its SF downtown store. It was buzzing with people in and out…So what kind of people are getting into teas?

My coworkers are always impressed with my spent tea leaves. One even commented “I had no idea tea was a plant.” Oh my!

Tea tasting parties sound like fun. It would be a good idea for a Meetup.

i was thinking about it, wondering where would be a good location: in-home or in-public. Both have pro and con…maybe like a club lounge. My condo building has a club lounge where I and friends could bring kettle and tea sets.

If at home, have everyone bring something. A lounge would be a nice place. Not sure where in public besides a tea room or tea bar though.

public places like a tea room, would they allow you to bring your own teas? otherwise, how would they make money? hmm

You pick one specific type to try at a tea room.

It’s funny how topics appear just when you need it! I was just asked by a group of women to do a little presentation and tasting on tea. I am in an educational Sorority made up of teachers and retired teachers. Like mentioned above, most think a herbal teabag is pretty adventurous. So about 20 women will be coming over. I don’t think I will do too much with unflavored teas since they are not my favorites. I think smelling and seeing loose leaf might be enough to get some of these women interested. I will probably do a white, black, herbal, green, rooibos, matcha, mate? Luckily, I will have time to think about it. I’ll be watching this discussion because I’m sure I’ll get a lot of good ideas.

I have little tea tastings and tea parties all the time! It is usually fairly casual with just some little snacks and just a few people. Usually I use one of my smaller teapots so that we all just get a little taste of one tea, then we move on to the next! Usually I will pull my little tea cabinet over to the table and I just let my friends look, I mean sniff, through the teas until they find one that they think it interesting. It is a great way to get to know people better, as well as introducing them to loose leaf tea!

If you’re interested in tea tasting parties but don’t live around any other tea enthusiasts, I’d start hanging around teatra.de more, because a lot of the regulars there like to plan tea tasting parties over skype and such. I haven’t been a part of one personally, but I often read through the resulting blog-posts.
