What variable temp kettle do you use and how long have you had it?

I have this model http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-CD-LCC30-3-0-Liter-Electric-Dispensing/dp/B00009K3TE/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1401065613&sr=8-6&keywords=zojirushi+3L
The only difference between this and other models is this is not as tall, so it fits pretty well under lower cabinets. It also has the descale function (not necessary, just let it ‘reboil’ a few times) and overheat protection (great to have!)

I’ve had it for 5 years or there-abouts and it’s still running strong. It’s pretty much the same as any of the other Zojirushi kettles but it’s not as tall. I just use the descale function with citric acid every three months or so, and that’s only necessary because the water were I live is kind of hard. (The cleaning packets by Zojuirushi are expensive! And it’s only citric acid!) The only times it’s been off really are during cleanings and the 3 times I’ve moved. It’s really a type of device you can plug in and forget about. Mine is usually set for 195F. I know my Mom has had hers for 8+ years, and she’s got a 5L version. I think Costco once sold a Tiger branded kettle of this type awhile ago, I don’t know if they still do.

The only time I’ve ever seen these types of kettles break are either because you drop it or you let it boil dry. The newer versions from this company have the overheat protection which prevent it from boiling dry, it just shuts off. One of my college roommates broke one because we cleaned it, and no one remembered to fill it up before plugging it in, but it was a no-name brand version you can get for maybe $30 but only has one temperature setting. On the other hand it’s incredibly versatile! I remember one of the RAs in my freshman dorm boiling two dozen eggs for Easter projects in hers. Plus hot water is always good for ramen. _

It’s better to buy in-store though, some models have stainless steel insides and others have other materials. So if you’re sensitive about that stuff, it’s better to look at in-person.

Ack, I just blew out the heating element on my vintage Japanese ceramic electric kettle. Back boiling on the stove again and to laborious research to get another electric…

For the high tech tea lover, this variable temperature tea kettle can be controlled from your iPhone! Available in the UK, release of 110V model not known but would be cool to hear reviews on this iKettle!

I have a Breville One Touch that I’ve had for five years now, I think. It may have been the first model out as I recall it being a hot new thing when I requested it for Mother’s day. Admittedly, I go for periods where I don’t do tea much, but then I go through periods where I do tea a lot. I’ve never had any trouble with it. (Watch, now that I’ve said that it will stop working.)

I also have a Zorijushi CD-WBC, which isn’t a kettle, but a boiler and dispenser. I got it a few months before I got the Breville and the usage pattern is the same except that during the time I’m in tea mode it stays on 100 percent of the time. Still working great.
