Tea for a small child

I want to invite a 5yr.old to tea during a garden tour at my home. The invitation will say “Emma, and guest” which I will write in parenthesis, “Mommy”. My question: any suggestion as to which tea is appropriate for a young child? decaf? regular with lots of milk and a sweetener? ask her mother first?

ask her mother beforehand

I have seen a few fruit or flowery herbal teas used as children’s tea at tea parties, no caffeine and usually sweet.

I find 5 yr olds tend to like ‘imaginary tea’, but otherwise I second the fruit/herbal tisanes. But it depends on her household, some start their children on tea very young.

I think an herbal dessert tea would be perfect.

If you want to have “real” tea (ie with tea leaves) you could try Hojicha. Its roasted so has very little caffeine in it and is naturally sweet. They serve it to children and the elderly in Japan.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ll make note of each.

Yes, the reason I also thought of asking the mother first was because they attend a church where coffee or tea, i.e. caffeine, may not be accepted even for adults. It’s just an assumption.

If the child is of Mormon faith you might also want to offer cold tea. (they aren’t allowed hot beverages)

Then I would definitely ask the Mom first and suggest a couple different options including a fruit/herbal tea and a dessert tea.

Well if drinking tea concerned with a young small kid, then i would suggest to have lemon ice tea, which is not only tangy from taste point of view but also doesn’t have any side effect on health too.

If caffeine is a concern if their religion herbal tea would be ideal.
Perhaps keep it simple. chamomile or peppermint.

I’d give them a nice normal cup of tea but just don’t give them loads. Future tea drinker in the making?
