What's your favorite tea and why?
Hi, I’m new to this site and I’d really like to know what kinds of tea people enjoy, so I thought I’d throw out the question of favorite tea of all time.
Japanese sencha. Can’t explain: it’s the smell, the taste, everything.
Spend many a fortune on first picks and high grades..
as for blacks: Ceylon only (single estate & specific regions… call me picky lol)
have overspend on to try other teas, but disliked most.
Hate flavoured teas, and rooibos makes me sick.
Most of my budget is spent on high grades senchas & ceylons. I am perfectly fine with that: I don’t drink, don’t smoke, so this is the little extra I feel I am entitled to…..
Special Dark by Mandala (every morning) – it is a ripe pu’er. Golden Orchid by Whispering Pines – because, well sublime, and Golden Fleece by Verdant – because also sublime.
Special Dark in the morning sounds great! However, I was under the impression that pu’er doesn’t have much caffeine.
You’re correct, I don’t think pu’er has that much caffeine. I drink SD for comfort and happy mouth and to start my stressful days off on a happy note. I have other tea or coffee in the morning in addition to my SD – but this is my comfort
zone and it makes me hum with pleasure.
I have that Mandala Special Dark on my wishlist. I think it has chocolate notes doesn’t it? I’ll have to get a sample next order which probably won’t be for awhile as I have too many teas!
you’d be surprised how much caffeine tea has. Because of how it’s brewed, typically not as much as a cup of coffee, but there’s a lot, especially if you’re drinking all day long.
I bet if you were to use about 6-8 grams of special dark and do one really long brew or 2 medium ones, you’d get the equivalent of a cup of coffee.
The big difference is how the caffeine is bonded between coffee and tea. Tea has other properties which allow for a slower release and perhaps some other elements which counteract the jitters.
So yeah, tea probably won’t give you that jolt like a cup of coffee (some greens and whites do have a stimulating effect). But don’t think it’s low caffeine, because that’s a big myth.
So funnily enough, I guess i would have to say my favourite tea is Laoshan Black. It’s not the most out of this world amazing tea, and that’s part of it’s charm. There’s very little i can do to ruin a cup; it’s pretty consistent in what it delivers; it’s not so over the top that i feel like i have to dedicate time to really focusing on it’s taste – i can drink it in the background OR focus on it. Are there other teas i love more? probably, but there’s a reason i keep coming back to it, so it’s probably as close to a “favourite” as i would ever get.

Favorite black tea: Angel’s Dream by English Tea Store (or Whistling Kettle)
Favorite Oolong: Vanilla Silk Oolong by Whistling Kettle ( aka Silk Dragon from The Tea Merchant)
Favorite caffeine free: Vanilla Berry Truffle Rooibos by The Whistling Kettle
If I had to choose only one, though, it would be the Vanilla Silk Oolong. It is really creamy and delicious.
I would really have a hard time nailing this down. At one time last year my favs were earl grey green and jasmine green. Now I am in love with anything buttery and nutty: light oolongs (best are from Taiwan), bi luo chun, mao jian, dragonwell… Since I’ve been trying so many teas between the end of last year and so far into this year, I might have a fav nailed down by next year. Maybe.
My favorite type of tea would be a nice Ceylon. But my absolute favorite tea is Ito-En/Wegman’s Lavender Sencha. There is nothing as relaxing and comforting as a nice cup of aromatic soothing lavender and bright seaweed-y sencha.
Yunnan (Gold) black teas. They come in nice, mildly sweet flavours. Some even taste like yams. I find the leaves really pretty as well.
The ones I’ve tried from Teavivre were really good.
