New Gaiwan and Decanter! Yay!
So I spent about half an hour yesterday poring over the ceramic section of the local Japanese surplus store. It’s amazing how many tea sets they have. Didn’t find what I wanted, so I asked them to show me any other stuff… ultimately found a 200ml gaiwan and decanter, they even offered it 15% off when I was thinking of putting some money down on layaway instead of buying it on the spot.
Now, I just have to figure out how to properly use it. Pretty tough, and I’ve accidentally scalded my foot (pouring it out on the kitchen counter, rather than on a table) so far, but I’m getting the hang of it!
Did you say Japanese surplus store?? Omg if I had something like that near me, I would probably spend too much! Where can one find such a store?
Using a gaiwan gives reason for the bamboo tea table to exist and be justified as a purchase. I got one because I do drip tea around no matter what method I use and the tea droplets started to leave stains on the countertop that are hard to get out.
Yeah. They’re popular here in my country. You can get a bunch of Japanese stuff either first hand surplus or second hand (like my fridge). I’ve known about this one for a couple years now, since it’s along a route that I travel regularly, but the sign says “Japanese Bike Surplus”, and of course when you’re looking out of a car window you only notice the bikes.
Then I ran into a previous coworker of mine at an antique shop near my place, told her I was canvassing for teaware, and she was like, “Oh then you should also try the Japanese Surplus store with the bikes. They have loads of ceramics and teaware.” True enough, I was going dizzy from all the teaware there and how I had such little money.
Oh, wow. Sounds like I should get a tea tray, then…
