Homemade Houjicha

Just thought I would share this tea companies solution for dealing with green tea that has gone stale or flat.

Scroll towards the bottom of the page for instructions.

I have done the frying pan method before, oh man, my kitchen smelled soooo good while roasting it!

I can imagine! How did it turn out? What kind of tea did you use?

I used some Tomo Sencha from Wegmans and once I used a Kukicha (I also want to say it was from Wegmans, but I might be remembering) My first small batch I burned a bit…it was tasty but a bit charcoal-y. The second batch was much better, very roasted but also still retaining some of the grassy green.

I have also roasted my own buckwheat for soba cha, that was also delicious (though a bit burnt…but I blame the lack of temperature control on my electric stove…the previous stove I used was gas and so much easier to control!)
