Shanghai

A friend of mine is in Shanghai (lucky duck) and plans to have tea – what must drink / see / go to tea places do you know of in Shanghai?

Shanghai does not have the tea culture of places like Suzhou, Hangzhou or Chengdu, but it is a melting pot of cultures. This means you can find teas from all over China and internationally.

The quality and reliablility of Shanghai tea shops and tea houses is varied. There are alot of tea markets in the city, but Tianshan is the most famous and probably one of the best. There are lots of reviews on TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g308272-d2312338-Reviews-Tianshan_Tea_City-Shanghai.html The Minor Sights blog also includes an interesting review: http://www.minorsights.com/search/label/China?

Shanghai also has some good places for afternoon tea including some of the 5* hotels along the Bund and places like TWG.

Be warned about the infamous tea ceremony scam that is previllent around the tourist hotspots, especially on Nanjing Road, the Bund, Yu Gardens etc.. Don’t be taken in by friendly ‘students’ offering you a traditional experience.

If you’d like to learn a little more about Shanghai’s tea history we, Wan Ling Tea House Shanghai, have a short blog series online for you to explore: http://www.wanlingteahouse.com/article.php/103/shanghai-and-tea-a-timeline
