Just for Fun: Take this quiz to see which tea brewing style suits you best!

So I had this silly idea to make a PlayBuzz quiz that asks you ten questions to try to determine what type of teaware and tea brewing style would be the most suited to your tastes and habits.

I had a lot of fun making this and despite that it’s just meant for fun and a little bit of humor I actually put a lot of thought into the options and how they relate to the results. I’m hoping that this might actually expose some people to new teawares and brewing styles they didn’t know about or wouldn’t have thought to try. I threw in little dashes of education in the results in case people are intrigued enough and would like to look into it more, especially on the lesser known styles (lesser known among the common crowd anyway, pretty well known on Steepster).

So if you’d like… take it, report your results and whether or not they are accurate! There are 8 possibilities.

And let me know if you catch a mispelling or typo that’s more than just a misplaced comma or something.

Cheers!

Cute quiz! I got yixing, which doesn’t surprise me because I’ve really started enjoying gong fu brewing lately and plan to pick up one of these little teapots in the future!

Awesome! I took the quiz too, and since I had so much going through my head during the process just writing all the content my mind was boggled enough to answer the questions honestly without thinking of the outcomes assigned to them and having a bias for my results. I also got Yixing, and despite that Gaiwan is definitely my favorite tea vessel to use regularly, I am riding the wave of excitement from having just gotten my first yixing pot a couple days ago. I’ve seasoned it with some Taiwanese oolongs and it is just so exciting seeing how the flavors develop with each session! I’d say yixing probably is a very good choice for me.

If teawares were free… I have to wonder if I’d like to have a gaiwan or rather to have yixing pots seasoned for all my favorites!

Yixing!

“If you were the kid who had five virtual pet keychains in school and refused to stop bringing them once they were banned, Yixing is the teapot for you.

A teapot with its own personality? One that you have to take very special care of and keep on a strict diet? One that comes with its own papers??? Is there really such a thing?

There sure is. This tiny unglazed teapot is made from a special type of clay that absorbs the flavors of tea you brew in it. And of course if you give it a treat it’ll show you its best trick! It gives these flavors back to teas you brew in it in the future, so each little tea session becomes more and more complex in character and flavor. The ideal types of tea for these pots are mostly on the dark side of the flavor spectrum: oolong, black, and puer. But beware, once you feed it a tea you had better feed it teas of the same type from then on or it will get sick. Oh, and don’t let the tiny size fool you. The traditional method of brewing with a Yixing pot is Gongfu Cha, a Chinese way of brewing tea which involves stuffing it full of tea leaves and brewing about five or ten pots in quick succession.

Like any pet, a good caregiver is an educated one. It’s going to take a bit of learning and preparation to learn to treat this handsome devil right, and you may have to go out and buy it a few cute accessories. Oh me, oh my, they’re all so little! EEEEEH!"

I don’t actually own any yixing as it’s not ideal for my drinking habits, but I do enjoy gongfu style. Neat quiz!

Awesome! Got Gaiwan as the result. Not even surprised, I just got my hands on a cute color changing gaiwan! :-)

There are color-changing gaiwan!? I would love to see that!

Yes there are! :-) There are some photos of it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/127882037@N04/sets/72157646594498834/

That’s so cool! Wherever did you find such a thing?

It’s from a Hungarian store called Tea Útja (Way of Tea). Link is here: http://teautja.hu/index.php?url=webshop&action=details&item_id=1364849975

Price is around $16 + shipping (it was $4 to my Hungarian address)

I got yixing too! I loved the learning question! “I climb learning curves like ninjas climb walls.”

Haha thank you. Yixing was my result as well.

I got chawan. Which is funny because matcha is wasted on me. Is bone china actually one of the possible outcomes?

Lion select said

Haha oh no. I had a feeling someone would get the matcha option and not like matcha at all. I’m still new to it and it’s very hit and miss for me. Though even if I didn’t like it I can’t help but think I’d still want to sit and whisk it just for fun… make someone else drink it. :P

And the possibilities for the results were: Teabags, Infuser, Tumbler, Teapot, Gaiwan, Chawan, Yixing Pot, and “Kyusu, Houhin, or Shiboridashi” are lumped into one result because it would only let me make 8 results. I put those three together since they’re all made for Japanese green tea and function similarly.

‘teapot’ is probably close enough for what I actually do. :)

Tumbler, lol! This line describes me perfectly

“If your tea is not with you, something’s not right with the world.”

Lion select said

Hehehehe. Yessss.

Me too! People sometimes actually comment on it when my precious tumbler isn’t within reach. Very accurate quiz for me :)

Haha. I’m the reason they started Neighborhood Watch, huh? Well, that’s pretty accurate. If I enjoy something, I do tend to push it on/include everyone around me. xD

“Teapot”

Gaiwan.

I love using my gaiwans! They’re such interesting dishware with lovely shapes and require graceful maneuvers to pour the tea. Never brewed English Breakfast with one before xD

And lol at skunk in Riesling. It’s one of the few wines I know I like.

Lion select said

Hehehe. I bet your gaiwan would love you even more if you brought it breakfast in bed someday! XD

???

Lion select said

Oh it’s just part of the joke I made in the quiz result. I was talking about actually making it breakfast in bed because you love it so much. I didn’t realize the link to “English Breakfast” tea when I wrote it. I was think of a “Full English Breakfast”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_breakfast

Oh OK I get it now xD

Cool quiz. Took it got Yixing as a result. Accurate.

Lion select said

That was my result too. My usual teaware and favorite is a gaiwan, but I just got my first Yixing a couple days ago and am having so much fun with it. I think the quiz helped me unveil my own hidden tea interest. Haha.

Yixing. I agree with that. The information sponge.

Lion select said

Aha! That’s such a cool realization. I hadn’t even thought of it that way till you said this. I asked the “information sponge” question because certain teawares require a pretty steep learning curve to learn how to use them really well (Yixing among them). I hadn’t thought of an yixing pot as a literal “information sponge”. It is! How cool! :D
