Sooo how much do you spend?

I took a quick skim and I don’t think this topic was discussed before. Now I could be wrong. This thread was inspired by evil steepster members. So how much do you spend a month on tea / teaware, etc.

HAY. I think I’m one of those evil Steepster members! D:

I… don’t really spend all that much on tea. I just started out with my first order from Adagio, and now there’s the insanely awesome Golden Moon sampler (for $20! Their entire catalog! 31 teas!). So yeah… not much. I don’t see myself buying a lot in the near future, now that I have a nice little stash going.

I’ll probably end up spending around $20 every two months or so.

HAHAHAHA! Too much!

I’m only allowed to buy tea out of my “allowance”, but that’s also used for other fun things (video games, massages, books, etc). I’m not sure how much I’m spending on tea, but I’m spending more since finding Steepster and learning about all of these great teas!

allowance?

denisend said

Yep, as part of our household budget the husband and I each get an allowance that we’re allowed to spend, guilt free, on anything that we want.

This way we don’t feel deprived of getting small pleasures, but it does put a limit on how much we spend towards that stuff.

That’s how we do things too. Initially my husband bought my argument that tea was a food item and should be treated that way. Then he saw my tea bill from last month (which shall remain unnamed) and he’s now thinking that either the tea bill gets under control or that we re-classify it from the food budget to allowance.

Cofftea said

Oh ok. Sorry, that word has a bad conotation w/ me. I watched too much I Love Lucy as a kid I guess. Simple solution- get your hubby to drink it so it can go in the groccery budget too.;)

denisend said

Tea=food…. I sometimes sneak that one by (usually when we’re at Teavana and BOTH getting stuff).

Though… I just realized that I bought stuff for him in my recent Stash order and it came out of MY allowance. HRMPH!

denisend said

Cofftea – that doesn’t work, since my husband also drinks tea but thinks we have PLENTY.

Sure we have tea, just not this one and that one and OH, look at that one…..

Cofftea said

Then consider that part of his Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) gift.:)

Ricky said

Haha, you can never have enough tea in the cupboard. There are just too many to try!

denisend said

Ricky – I know! Though I should really start trying to rehome some of the stuff I’m not fond of.

Already ahead of you. I was going to start a thread next week to do a holiday tea swap / give away. I figure that way we could ship it out by the 15th. I definitely have a few tea that I don’t really enjoy but I know other members would enjoy more. cough white cucumber.

Cofftea said

@Ricky, yeah you can if it causes you to go into debt, you become a hoarder, you just plain run out of room to store it (in my case a small house w/ little storage means just because I run out of room doesn’t mean I’m a hoarder), or you have so much tea that it doesn’t get drank before it looses its peak freshness.

Cofftea said

@Ricky, you need to be quiet now. LOL j/k. White cucumber is my FAVORITE, but I really don’t need anymore- I have an 8oz tin that’s still half full. But if I was running low I’d be practically begging for it!:) Have you tried it cold?

Ricky said

I have, I can drink it cold, but it isn’t my favorite. I have to try it sweetened though since I usually drink cold tea sweetened. Actually, I have a really weird idea. I’ll have to try it on the weekend. White Cucumber Lemonade Sweetened =D

Cofftea said

The idea of it sweetened makes me shutter… How about a mojito made w/ cold white cucumber tea instead of lemon lime soda.

Ricky – I’d love the idea of a swap, but I’m hesitant about giving out my contact info on an open forum like this.

That said…. I have some MISTAKES that I wouldn’t mind seeing go to new homes (Sweet Lily White!).

Ricky said

Basically my idea was everyone who was interested would add an reply listing tea they have to give away / an email address to contact the person. No side chatter on the thread. Basically you edit your initial post if the tea is taken or if you have more tea to add. When a person has received the tea, they could reply to your thread and say thanks, etc. That would be reputation, which we could build up until Steepster implements a swap system for us.

Now for the concerns about giving away your contact information. Well, I guess it’ll have to be treated like Ebay or criaglist. Check the person’s taste notes, comments, etc. and judge for yourself whether or not you want to disclose your information with them.

As for me, I’d be more than happy to provide my ebay feedback / another forum’s feedback when the time comes.

Excuse my nose, I’ve been considering something like a travelling teabox for a while, which I think might be fun and would be a way to share far and wide. I wouldn’t mind starting one and send it across to America, as long as at least one person was willing to send it back to Europe again. As long as it can wait until january. :)

Ricky said

I love that idea. We can make a list of people who would like to participate. We could send it to people within Europe first then out to the states to minimize shipping fees. We can try tea within the box and add more, add notes, pictures, whatever. Sounds interesting =D

Angrboda said

I’ve tried it once before and the waiting for it to get to me was almost as good as actually getting it. Of course it can get out of hand when people add more than they take out, so there would need to be some discipline there or it will get really expensive to send. Anyway, that was over at LJ and people posted pictures of the stash when they got it so everybody could see how it was growing. There was a little notebook in where people could write what they put in and what they took out.
I figured it would have to be planned so everybody could send it the shortest possible way and crossing as few as possible borders, and everybody would only need the address of the person they were shipping to. This should really be a new thread, shouldn’t it?

Yea teaplz, you would be. I’m still tempted to purchase that Golden Moon sampler, I’m going to resist for a while longer. I started my tea [fill in the blank] a month + 1 week ago and I’ve spent about….. =X (Ain’t going to say!) and it’s incrementally increasing. In my defense, I go through the tea fairly quickly seeing as I gave samplers to friends and I’ve been pushing everyone that comes over to drink some =D.

Steepster definitely caused me to purchase more tea than I would have if I didn’t find this site.

Cofftea said

That’s funny… you ask how much other people spend a month, but you won’t tell how much you spend…

Ricky said

Isn’t it? I need to set an “allowance” so I can purchase without guilt. ;)

Cofftea said

I meant ironic. I actually think it’s pretty hypocritical that you ask a question you aren’t willing to answer.

Ricky said

Haha, well initially when I started this post I was trying to log onto Adagio to check my purchase history. I gave up when the site didn’t load. If you insist, I must have spent an average of almost $20/week (this includes teaware).

How much I spend really differs. It all depends on if I’m buying gifts or just for myself. For example, Dec. is a BIG month for me because I’m buying gifts. I swore I wasn’t going to buy anything for me because my tea stash is maxed out and so is my check book because of my gift purchases. Unfortunately my matcha craving won out so I bought a complete matcha set. I also needed a glass alternative to my ingenuitea so I bought that. Which lead me to the tea garden’s tea rubs. But, I actually ended up saving myself money because all the purchases I made for myself I got at least 20% off so I saved myself money by buying them now vs. later. It also depends on where I make my purchases from because some companies have rewards programs which I use to save money. I have over 1000 frequent cup points from adagio that I have built up. Where I make my purchases also may make my total spending more or less because while I may have to pay for shipping, I may get a cheaper deal online.

I cannot tell a lie, therefore I won’t say. I think not nearly enough my husband says too much. I am sure it is an utterly gross amount

I was appalled when I put together my budget and found I was spending $50/month-ish on tea! I have cut myself down to $20/month to spend on tea, though I tend to spend a little more (I pull it from my spending money).

My purchases are sort of made in spurts. Months go buy when I don’t buy new stuff in any significant amount, and then I’ll get a period where I buy a lot. I have no clue what that would average per month. It varies a lot for me.

I spend in waves of 3-6 months, with english breakfast and peach apricot getting the most frequent refills. This year I want to custom blend some of my teas and give them as xmas gifts, so I might need to refill again. However I probably spend at least $150 – $200 a year on tea alone. Not counting my insane fine bone china teaware addiction.

I spend in fits and starts. I must have spent about $80 this month on an online order (Harney & Sons – so far, gorgeous!!) because I was almost completely out of tea! Before that, I think I spent $30 a few months ago at a local shop (Premium Steap in Philadelphia). I am going to try and wait at least until January before ordering again – the Upton Tea Company online is looking very attractive to me :) I always visit my local shop every few months for refills on my faves (Organic Black Tea with Coconut especially! – Can’t live without it!).
