drank Gingerbread Chai by 52teas

In my humble opinion, Anne of 52teas is a superstar blender of chai mixes. All her black tea chais have been fab. I’ve said enough about this one already. The bag is now empty and I am on my last cup of this deliciousness. I may have another wee bit of this stashed away somewhere, but this bag is done.

Sipdown.

Aww, that’s good to know. I haven’t tried any of her chai blends yet.

They work for me. And Sil. I do not take responsibility if they are not your cup of tea. :)

Love this one. Can’t really say what is going on here beyond chocolate and coconut. Vanilla maybe? Marshmallow maybe? Whatever. This one in my humble opinion is a star.

Thanks, VariaTEA.

At first sip, I adored this tea. Then, I started getting a bit bored as I made my way through the cup. Smokey and maple—what’s not to love? But the base didn’t seem to hold my attention. I have enough leaf to give it another whirl to see if I really do adore it and desperately need more or whether I can live without it.

Thanks for the sample, VariaTEA.

I tried this one for the first time last night. Delicious! But the dry leaf is so so heavy. It is one of those that likely I have to think and rethink several times when it comes to reordering because of the weight of it. The weight + the cost = insufficient cups of tea for the price. But we’ll see, we’ll see.

Brilliant sun scattering the pouring rain here as I sit in a cafe soaking up their wifi and catching up on posting my scribbled tea notes from the past few days.

This is one punchy kick in the pants tea. The label tells me that it is a premium robust black blend of Indian (Assam and Nilgiri) and a Chinese black. It reminds me of a Damn Fine Teas concoction. Drinking this black and unsweetened, it is just on the verge of wanting an addition, but it is really really good on its own. Rich malty stone fruit. This is one that I’d like to keep around.

Cold steep cassis and berry deliciousness. Funny how cold steep brings out a different kind of depth of flavour, not that I can describe what the difference is here though.

drank Bananas Foster by 52teas

Wrote this the other day, so delayed weather. :)

Finishing this sample up. I could be out there going for a walk on this lovely windy day, but instead I am pacing around here fuming about my inconsiderate neighbours—and I am not even home to be bothered by them. The mind is a remarkable thing.

And drinking tea. Second cup of this. I had a bit of banana chip in the dry leaf though in the steeped tea, it’s not coming through all that much. Instead, I am getting oatmeal cookie with that cinnamon hint. Nice base. Possibly the slightest bit of cream. I am drinking this black and unsweetened today. And missing my Banana Pudding. :)

Sample sipdown.

There seemed to be a proliferance of turmeric teas at our last tea festival in town. This is one of the ones I picked up from this new, for me, tea blender.

I’ve been experimenting with steeping methods and the winner for me is throwing a couple of spoons into a cooking pot, adding boiling water, covering with the lid, and letting it steep for 8 to 10 minutes, adding a spoon of honey and a glug of milk or half and half, and pouring the finished chai through a sieve into a cup or carry thing.

Nice ginger and turmeric bite. Healthy zip from the black pepper. Ginger and cardamom shine too. Vanilla softens things up a bit. Really nice blend. I’ve been quite pleased with teas from this maker: fresh, creative, inspired. I look forward to more from them.

Note to self—-you do not actually need any more tea.

My real tea obsession began in February 2015.

Not, sadly, when I had been living and working in China, though I very much enjoyed sampling a variety of teas during my travels there as well. No, no, that would have been far too sensible.

I am a reformed coffee drinker. I still enjoy a long double espresso with a good quantity or milk or cream from time to time, but for now, tea is my thing. All day.

*note—this is way out of date, so if we are doing a swap and you are checking to see what I like and dislike, mostly never mind what you find below. One of these days, I will update this. In the meantime, check what I’ve been drinking and use your own judgement. I like all the teas. Well, I am open to trying all the teas.

I tend to drink black, green, or oolong tea in the morning to early afternoon. Rooibos or
Honeybush or herbal in the evening. And perhaps some sort of sleepy-type tea in the wee hours.

This year, I’ve been discovering flavoured teas, so it may look like that is all I drink although that would provide a false impression.

Not a big fan of chocolate or mint in teas, but I will try them and, from time to time, have been pleasantly surprised. Also, usually I dislike a prominent cinnamon flavour, if untempered with other things, in teas. Again, I say usually, because there are exceptions.

Also, please note that haven’t quite gotten into the habit of updating my tea cupboard on Steepster, and it is unlikely that I will do this on any kind of regular basis.

I drink my tea black and unsweetened. If there comes a rare moment that I add something to it, I will mention it.

Finally, while I thank large and successful tea companies for tantalizing and beckoning me to the world of tea, I prefer to support independent ventures with real people, real enthusiasm and commitment, and real dreams.

Currently, I am researching monthly tea subscriptions. Perhaps it will keep me out of tea shops.

And here is Shae’s rating scale— which I am using with permission, of course— which more or less describes the way I have been rating teas. I am going to make more of an effort to stay very close to these parameters now.

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-40: This tea is not good but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

41-60: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

61-75: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

76-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.
