Herpes zoster or commonly known as shingles is an unfamiliar term for a lot of people. It is one of the most painful viral infections around as it primarily infects the sensory nerves. The etiologic agent for shingles is the varicella-zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox.

When an individual is infected with chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the dorsal nerve ganglia and reactivates again when repeated exposure happens. Shingles will commence once there is a very weak immune system, so the infection is common among immunosuppressed and geriatric individuals. However, everyone should take precautionary measures as you will never know when your immune system will fail.
