Late afternoon tea with R before he heads back out for a PTA meeting. This smelled promising but then lacked flavor as DTs are sometimes wont to do. Prefer Florence on one of its good days (is that tea moody as heck for anybody else BTW?). As husband noted, still better than cat pee, ha.

I LOVE Florance – it’s never been moody for me, but maybe I’m just lucky, 3 tsp/16 oz 95C 4-5 minutes.
LOL better than cat pee isn’t really a glowing recommendation…

Was prepared not to love this, thought it might end up a little too brightly Ceylon-forward a la Red-Tailed Hawk for me to consider drinking regularly. But the balance of smooth deep Assam and bright coppery Ceylon is really good here, makes a splendid first-thing-with-food tea, flavorful and bold but smooth, just bright enough to wake you up and cut the greasy starch in your pancakes, and interesting thanks mostly to the depth in the sweet Keemun and malty Assam but not so complex or busy that you’d feel bad drinking it while still waking up. A+++ would drink again! Reminds me vaguely of The Black Lotus (less complex though), with Ceylon instead of Darjeeling playing the part of the bright sparkly note.

As always with SST blacks, I cut the steep time way down, only 3 minutes compared to their without-fail recommended (hair-raising!) 5. Funny, they’re one of the only tea companies whose directions I always automatically disregard with no reservations or regrets.

Not jawdroppingly awesome but a heckuva lot better than that cat pee-smelling cassis blend, eesh.

boychik

Oh i am still awaiting. is it chocolate cream or some floral as well?

ifjuly

i was so busy trying to not think of cat pee tea i was just grateful it had a lot of milky chocolate at the end of the sip. i didn’t detect floral, especially not fauchon levels of floral, but i might have been distracted. (:

Dry, like bad smarties-ish candy; steeped, like cat pee. My husband mentioned it and after that I had to pour mine out and make some Chocolate Eclair instead. Eugh.

boychik

Sorry it didnt work for you, but I’m sure you can find some awesome tea in your stash.

ifjuly

yes, thank goodness it was a sample and that was all of it! phew! (:

drank Sicilian Vespers by Red Leaf Tea

This surprised me. It has that plasticky straw floral element I associate with the Earls I don’t like, that Med grocer bottled orange blossom essence and jasmine thing. So you’d think I’d dislike this, but there’s enough great layered other stuff going on—a surprising thick juiciness, indeed the sparkling but also fruity dry wine quality, etc.—I rather enjoyed it. An unusual and lovely white blend.

drank Kashmiri Chai by Golden Moon Tea

We got the revert-to-cold snap last night I was hoping for and I jumped on it as a chance to drink up some chai! I did them all proper even, the whole 10 to 20 minute stovetop dance with milk and honey as I’ve decided that’s just the only way I’m ever satisfied drinking chai.

Wasn’t nuts for this one. It was rather bitter. Not awful, but compared to the others I had last night it was my least favorite. Ah well.

“…you can never know everything about anything, especially something you love.”
-Julia Child on food and cooking, and I think it applies to tea as well!

note: i am currently taking a break from swapping/mail of any kind as money is rather tight. i apologize! i do love to swap but i can’t afford to right now. hopefully in a month things will change.

my cupboard includes any tea i’ve ever owned, including things i’ve sipped down, in order to facilitate swaps with people and keep a record—this way i don’t get redundant samples/order duplicates to try. if you are interested in swapping, i have a separate ever-updated list of teas i actually have on hand i can PM.

i like strong, rich blacks (including some choice old skool CTCs); juicy-fruity flavored green blends; buttery chinese greens; light floral oolongs; flavored oolongs (how sacrilegious!); earl greys; smoky blends; second flush muscatel darjeelings; verdant’s straight oolongs steeped in a gaiwan (mind altering!); anything from laoshan village it seems.

favorite notes include lavender, bergamot, violet, fennel, cardamom, melon, honey, sandalwood, smoke, nuts, roasty/toasty stuff, malt, wood, leather, creamy lemon, steamed rice, artichoke, garden-sweet snap veggies, earth/soil, forest and wet bark, and mushroom.

notes i generally can’t stand (at least in tea) include jasmine, rose (ok in small doses but i often find it overpowering and then everything just smells like musty old lady perfume), astringent apple (and general fruitiness really unless it’s with green tea), and chamomile (unless i’m congested or tired).

my current favorite tea vendors are butiki and harney and sons. i’ve also found some delicious teas and/or had good customer service experiences with the following companies: capital tea ltd., the devotea, verdant, mandala, golden moon, teavivre, lupicia, taiwan tea crafts, yezi tea, den’s tea, the tea merchant, norbu, fauchon paris, tao tea leaf, zen tea, fortnum and mason, townshend’s tea, joy’s teaspoon, new mexico tea company, persimmon tree, teajo teas, whispering pines, della terra, upton imports, mariage freres, samovar, justea, teabox, american tea room, steven smith, steap shoppe, utopia tea, and andrews and dunham damn fine tea. when i’m at the grocery store my “you could do worse” brands include stash, bigelow, tazo, taylors of harrogate, whittard of chelsea, and pg tips. and it’s a fact: you can’t make classic southern sweet tea without luzianne.

besides tea

born in seoul, raised in new england and upstate new york, went to college in pittsburgh, currently in memphis with an eye toward philadelphia, portland, or asheville eventually.

i like cats, most beverages really (i also like good freshly roasted coffee, craft beer, wine, whiskey and gin-based cocktails, and soda/soft drinks like agua fresca), art (mainly writing but also visual and music) and critical theory, feminism/genderqueer politics, historiography, statistics, children’s literature and librarianship, travel, and food/cooking. also have recently gotten into weightlifting (mark rippetoe and stumptuous!) and sprint training (HIIT, plyometrics) and i love it.
