1759 Tasting Notes

Oh yeahhhhh, this hits the spot :)
I remembered to add extra this time! and just for a change, some agave and milk. I think perhaps I was craving it because I missed out on spicy chocolate yesterday…
I’m getting quite a bit of astringency though, a little too much- a product of the extra leaves?? hmmm. Also, I’m definitely getting more of the roasted corn note here.

I was at the distillery district today with my girlfriends, this arts/food/shopping/European/historical inspired complex and managed to grab a cup of looseleaf at the chocolate shop… it was delightful! not as bold as the description on the menu stated, but I did taste a hint of raspberry. Of course, that could be the power of suggestion because it was the merest of hints, and the description mentioned raspberry… but there was definitely something sweet about the tea, and I added no sugar.
It’s not one I would go back to repeatedly though, but it’s definitely better than Tim’s or Starbucks, which I stoop to more often than I’d like!
Bah. Next time I’ll try the darjeeling they have.
Overall, highly pleasant! just not memorable— though it may have been had I chosen to drink it bare.
(((ok truth be told, I was sad that we didn’t make it to this other cafe in the complex that I hear has a supply of Mariage Freres. I think I need to make a special trip there asap!)))

mmmm Mariage Freres…I think I would hold out for it too!

Indigobloom

I know right?! mmmmm. I wish I had some now!

teawing

me too! exhausted my sample from QG long ago…

nomadinjeopardy

Ooh, when in the Distillery stopping by Balzac’s for MF is a must! They’re sometimes running low as I don’t think they order it very frequently, but one must take what one can. I’m not sure where you are, but they also have a location in Liberty Village.

Indigobloom

haha indeed!! I saw looseleaf at Cafe Uno, but didn’t have a chance to ask if that was where the Mariage Freres is sold. So tha tmeans there are THREE places where I can find tea in the Distillery!!! sweet :)

Indigobloom

Teawing: I still have most of mine, I’ve been saving it! but I’ve been craving it… I think tomorrow morning it needs to be had again :)

teawing

no saving for me, I devour the ones l really like.
3 local places! I am envious.

Indigobloom

ah see I tend to hoard them… and try and get rid of the ones I dislike. But I need to stop doing that or else what is the point?? I need to offload some of my so-so teas though
yup, I don’t know where to start!

teawing

make a list of available swaps, list some favorites and get to it! :)

drank Pink Flamingo by DAVIDsTEA
1759 tasting notes

I picked out some of the beetroot from the teaspoon I was using and it’s made for a much better tea!! more like the tess tea that I reviewed awhile back only not as thick and maybe a tad more tart.
Now that it’s cooled, I’m not enjoying it as much… Note to self: don’t drink this one when up and about!
Cold, it tastes almost like a pink lemonade… which would be fine if that is what I wanted. The thing is, I never was one for pink lemonade! maybe just the regular kind, but not all that often.
It seems to be disappearing out of the packet as well. All the chunks are rather heavy and bulky. I don’t mind that, I need to purge my bin to make room for new ones! :P

Better!!! than the last time I tried this…
I divied up the bag so that my friend could have her share, and I was right, all the flowers had shimmied to bottom :)
It tastes much better, and smoother for some reason, esp the second and third steep.
I tried some with milk, and some without, and my first cup with a stevia tab. All of them were pretty decent!! however the best was with just straight up sugar.
I had to add more sugar than I usually do to really taste the Osmanthus, or else it just sorta hides in the background and tastes more like a note of the oolong leaf rather than a separate add to the tea.
They still make it better in the shop of course, with all their fancy equipment and simple syrup. *sighs
I’m a little sad that I seem to have Osmanthus’d myself out for awhile. There was a point where this was all I could drink, and now, well I’m a little over it. That won’t last long though, I’ll be back at it again in a week or two! :P
One more thing: In my opinion, this tastes better iced!! and with sugar.

drank Milky Black by Ten Rens
1759 tasting notes

I was out and about all day, starting with hot yoga… so had to wait til afterwards before having any tea. As much as I love it, the stuff dehydrates me, especially the kind I was craving!! but the tapioca here made up for it :)
(that said, I never rate based on tap, only the tea)
It was ok, but they make it much better at another location I go to. Thus, normally this would get a much higher rating, but today, well not so much. They used far to much milk, and carnation milk at that! (which turns my stomach a bit, but it tastes great)
Oh well, it was still pretty tasty. Next time will be better.
Oh, and it doesn’t help that I have a raging headache now. Some sleep should fix it!

Daddyselephant

Okay, I’m dying to try these. Are they just bubble teas, or are they different?

Indigobloom

oh it’s bubble tea!! but Ten Ren’s uses premium tea, whereas the other places use powder or flavoured syrup

Daddyselephant

Ooooh…you’re in Toronto, yes? Any hints on where I can find it?

Indigobloom

I actually live in Mississauga but work in Toronto. The location I hit up most is Square One, but this time I was at Pacific Mall in Markham. They also have one in China Town at Huron and Dundas St, and another at Empress Walk (I can’t recall what subway st that is, but it’s near the top of the Yonge line) Oh and there is one in Richmond Hill somewhere as well!

Indigobloom

the Bubble Teas, attached to the Dundas subway (near the Eaton Centre) is also not half bad, but you would have to get the plain or honey green tea.
Let me know if you try it!! :)

Indigobloom

oops, I meant Bubble Tease*

Daddyselephant

My wife’s from Mississauga, we’re in Square One all the time LOL. We will definitely check them out!

Indigobloom

me to. They have a Teaopia there as well, but I wish it was a David’s!
The Ten Rens is on the bottom level near the Baskin Robbins and Yves Roche, down a ways from the food court. Enjoy!!! :)

Daddyselephant

Now I’m searching for reasons to go there LOL

Indigobloom

hehe, I do that all the time… except usually just go to my default of “I need to hit the bulk barn for cooking supplies”! and then forget to go there :P

After my sorry experience with Goji Pop, and my amazing experience with the ten ren’s watermelon, well I couldn’t help but try some of this!
It was ok… better than the goji, but not by much. Melons (except water) tend to taste fake to me, so I figured this one might, but I had also hoped that the watermelon would be stronger in flavour and that I might get some of the grain. no such luck. *sighs
(no surprise on that one though, I had to use a bag this time)
Next time, I’ll try it iced!
Even teas that are meant to be iced, well I always try them hot first, just to see what it’s like. I’m a little stubborn that way :P
It was however, nice to sip on while working away at the computer on a Friday afternoon though… maybe I’ll make it my Friday tea!

politicalmachine

i was considering this.. but now that you mention that it is only marginally better than the goji pop.. i think I’ll avoid. Probably get some more of the chocolate rocket..

Indigobloom

only if you dislike melon would I recommend avoiding it, that part of the tea is quite dominating… mmmm chocolate rocket. I keep it at work, but I wish I had some now!

errr, I am so confused. This is the tea I ordered, but it tasted nothing like blueberries. In fact, I could swear it was an oversteeped milky oolong (ok, my fault- I left the bag in too long)
Except, well when I finally did toss the bag (no way to resteep. Boo!), the leaves, from what I could see, looked “white”.
That said, I’m not going to rate it this time… that wouldn’t be fair.
Even if I did get the milky oolong, I wasn’t all that impressed, as the other versions of that same tea are superior in my books.
Oh well >.<

drank Strawberry Shortcake by Teaopia
1759 tasting notes

OMW to work this morning… and wow, it certainly hit the spot!!
The strawberry and cream flavour really comes through. I added no sugar at all, and some milk, yet it tasted as if I added liquid strawberry cream. I was in heaven!!!
There wasn’t much else besides those flavours. Maybe a hint of maltiness, and a touch of astringency. I wouldn’t want this tea often, but you can bet I will be buying some. Eventually. Or ASAP if I find out they’re ever discontinuing it :P
I love that it’s a dessert like tea, but different than the standard chocolate, caramel, or cookie variety I typically fall in love with.

drank Twinkle by Adagio Custom Blends
1759 tasting notes

Twinkle toes!!!!
that’s what the name reminds me of, every time I see it in the bin. I love teas with a fun name :)
and the taste… well, this is actually the second time I’m drinking it, but the first time I made it too weak, and added some sugar, which it didn’t need… so I waited to give it a fair review.
This time, there’s plenty o’leaves, no sugar, and a generous splash of milk. Yum!!
It’s malty, vanilla, coconut… all at once. A wonderful dessert tea, courtesy of the lovely QuiltGuppy who’s provided me with so much tea joy. Thanks for sharing this one, I am truly impressed :)

teawing

Lovely indeed, she has helped me the same way.

Indigobloom

a tea angel!!

teawing

She has good KSA’s :)

Indigobloom

heh, I work in HR… to me, that acronym means Knowledge, Skills and Abilities! :P

KeenTeaThyme

me too, indigobloom! although I work for the federal govt and that’s why I think of that! :)

QuiltGuppy

Aw, thanks. :) I’m really glad you like it, too. It’s one of my nighttime favorites. I didn’t know what KSA meant, though, so I think it should be just SA in my case… :) Then again, even that is doubtful some days.

teawing

LOL, I knew you were an HR person…but like KiTT my experience with the term is through govt. service. Fits QG for sure.

Indigobloom

wow so many gov’t people all in one place!
You have skills and abilities?? I mean, surely yes! but is that what you meant? lol… I’m not familiar with it any other way…

Indigobloom

and I have no doubts that you are a bonafide tea angel QG! :D

teawing

State now, not Fed any more…
:)

Indigobloom

ahh, that’s a different beast! atleast up here it is :P

drank Goji Pop by DAVIDsTEA
1759 tasting notes

Hmmmm, this was not what I expected!
I was hoping for that drying sensation/taste that I get from gojis and green tea sometimes, but none was forthcoming. In fact, I didn’t get any goji at all!! I’m wondering if somebody picked them out of the tin at the store?? I’ve heard rumours of the same happening with the watermelon equivalent…
Too bad, I so wanted to like this tea. All I got was sour “juice”! A hot lemon cider-ish drink that was overall tasty, but still not what I wanted.
Hmph.

Profile

Bio

Let’s see… I’m a tea and workout fanatic, I work in HR, and most of my friends consider me to be an egg. White on the outside, Asian on the inside :)
-from philosophy to food, I love it all
Otherwise, what you see is what you get! I can be very straightforward and yet shy.

Also, I’ve started taking tea sommelier classes and it is an absolute blast! Well, so far I’ve only finished the first out of eight courses, but I am really looking forward to the next one.

Anyhow, if your curious as to how I rate things, this is how I work…

0-25
Like eating dirt, or some other unsanitary indelicacy that mentioning in my profile here would likely get me banned.
I don’t think I’ve found cause to banish a tea to the wasteland yet though so who knows what it’d inspire ;P

25-50
You know that expression “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater”? I imagine drinking that water would be terrible enough to warrant this rating!
I’d never make my enemy drink this, but perhaps I’d throw it at them. Good thing I don’t have any enemies!

50-70
This is “tea”?? I tried finishing the cup… but my body rejected it. There may be others who enjoy this tea, but it’s beyond me!

70-80
I tried liking it, and I can almost get there! I certainly don’t hate it, but something is holding me back. Allergies? Men in white suits? who knows… certainly not me!

80-90
Lovely tea! Not my all time fave but close. I likely wouldn’t repurchase, but may decide to based on many factors: price, accessibility, whether it fills a “tea gap”, medicinal applications, and how often I crave it.
Every once in awhile I find the sweet spot that bumps these up to 90+. Those are the days I need to buy a lotto ticket!

90-95
Sweet Camellia! this is realllly good tea! Don’t talk to me until I’ve finished my cup…

95-100
Tea of the gods. I would do anything to get my hands on more of this liquid gold!
