1759 Tasting Notes
Positively lovely!
I know it says there are supposed to be flowers in here… but I’m getting cherries?? Dry, it smells floral, but when steeping, I smelled something akin to amaretto.
It’s naturally sweet on it’s own to, which I love. I had half a cup bare, and half with milk and sugar. Both are fantastic!
Bare, it is ever so slightly bitter, but more floral/cherry than bitter. It’s not very astringent, just a hint maybe.
It has a depth to it that reminds me of my childhood somehow. I can’t quite put my finger on why… something about the way it smells when really hot- not so much as it cools.
With milk and a dash of sugar, the sweetness really comes out. There is a mild toasted flavour as well. Similar to the budla, only floral and milder but with more depth.
This is intensely satisfying. Thanks again to QuiltGuppy, or as some might say… TeaGoddess :)
Preparation
Heaven!!! I had this cold yesterday with tapioca. It hit the spot. Refreshing, natural flavour with the true gritty texture of watermelon. I will definitely be going back for more of this! If they didn’t add so much sugar, it would be an addiction that could bankrupt me. Ha!
Mmmmm, now this is a tea to savour. Buttery smoothness with a mild nutty undertone- and I mean buttery in a good way, not the DT Buttered Rum way!
I could actually smell the “milk”, which I could not do with the last milk oolong I tried.
This is a backlog tea from yesterday so I’m a bit fuzzy on the details, but it was quite a treat! the second steep was better than the first, where the tea and milk parts were more balanced. I regret not having time to indulge in a third!
Oh and when the second steep got cold, there was a bitter finish. I didn’t let the first steep go cold so I’m not sure if that’s a unique to the second steep or just the tea overall.
I love the way the tea looks (and smells) dry to, all curled up in pretty little twisties.
BIG thanks to QuiltGuppy for sending it to me!! :)
Preparation
Hmmm, I’m not sure what to think! this SMELLS heavenly, and the first sip tastes like liquid strawberry goodness! but halfway through the cup it became oversteeped (which is tough to do with a rooibos)
I think I need to stop trying teas for the first time while at work- but that is when I crave a new tea experience the most! bah, what can ya do.
The rooibos completely took over the strawberry here. I think I should have added some agave as well. My throat is all irritated to, as the over-thick liquid was a bit much, and I have an extra large mug. I’m not giving up on this one though. There are so many options to play with! :)
I tried this on my way to work this morning. It was good! very much like the Budla only stronger… a tad bitter, maltier, and bolder however I don’t get nearly as much “marshmallow”.
Oh and it didn’t set my jitters off this time, which I thought was odd since I’d eaten a tiny breakfast so I’m wondering if there is less caffeine in this brew? I know that bolder coffees are roasted more, and thus have less of the stimulant in them, so perhaps tea follows the same principle. Who knows? (someone reading this, I am sure haha)
Anyhow, I’m not sure which I prefer between this and Budla. I’d like to try the DT counterpart to compare before really passing any judgment on it.
This was… not what I expected.
I highly suspect that if I brewed this at home in my tea master, that my experience would be very different.
The add of sugar can either make or break a tea for me… and I did add a little too much agave, it slipped out of the bottle faster than I anticipated. That seemed to bring out the vanilla a whole lot more than I wanted and made the liquid feel thick. The vanilla was just slightly overpowering.
Behind that though, there was a nutty aspect to it, and a slightly sour aftertaste the way I find some vanilla type products can be, creating an odd “astringent” finish. It was sortof a french vanilla, very heavy with something creamy about it
It was a good, solid tea, but it lacked that double “mmmmm” factor for me which makes me want another sip… heck, another pot!
Vanilla was never my “thing” but I do like it for a change now and again. I’m glad I didn’t buy any of this like I was considering.
Oh, and I hear that this one has little resteepability. What’s that all about?!
Preparation
I didn’t have much time to savour today… but overall, I was pleased! not thrilled mind you. The black tea, though light, comes out first, but I get the impression that the Lychee, which I get in the aftertaste and background, would be more present with some extra sugar. I added agave, but only a few drops. Even still, it is very refreshing and not at all astringent (yay!)
I’m curious as to what I can find in this tea when I play with the sugar/concentration/steep time etc. I’m at work so have no control over the water temp. I don’t think it is at boiling when it comes out of the tap/coffee maker. Such a shame… I wish the David’s was closer to my work so I could have a proper cuppa more often.
Anyhow, I’m hoping I can up this rating next time :)
Maybe I will even add some milk. Daring, I know… (that was sarcasm btw. I’m so funny… haha not… )
I tried a sample of this in the store today. Now, keep in mind that I am NOT a bergamot fan. It smells like lavender, and I hate lavender!!
Even still, this tea fell short of the low expectations I had… it was bitter (possibly due to oversteeping) and the floral scent and taste was overpowering. Ick.
I tried the Monk’s blend once, a few months ago and that sample was similarly bitter so I suspect that is the nature of tea kept in a big pot like they have… but that is not enough to make me like lavender. errr, bergamot.
Disappointing. I’ve had far too many misses at teaopia lately. It makes me wonder if their grade of tea is sub-par, or if DT’s just uses extra premium. Either way, I am falling out of love with this tea establishment, tea by tea.
The tea itself was not bad, but again, not great. I get the sense that a similar tea from DT would go a step beyond to actually impress me.
One thing I do appreciate is that they use a Tea Master, so I’m not left housing the bag in my cup until I either finish it or find a convenient time/place to dispose.
Anyhow, I digress… the tea! I could taste the white, it was definitely not a premium white. I found it scratchy and a little grassy. I think the rose is what made me itch. Am I the only one that ever gets that sensation from teas?? bah…
The pear was hiding behind the tea, peeking out every now and then but not really making itself known. I wish it had come out to play more- and this, despite the add of some rock sugar!
Even still, there was something mildly pleasant about this tea. I enjoyed it much more than the Mango white they have. There was some depth as well, which I think rounded it out some. Overall, the Strawberry white at DT’s is the one to beat. I almost wish I’d found that one later on so that these wouldn’t fall so short! Standing apart from it though, this one is pretty decent. Maybe my earlier statement of “disappointing” was a little harsh.
I tried this on the way into work this morning.
Unfortunately, as I was putting it down on the counter, my bag slipped off my shoulder and into the crook of my elbow which then jarred the tea and splashed it all over me. I put on quite a show. How embarrassing… *sighs
Anyhow, the tea, or what was left of it, was pretty good. I added agave and milk this time. If I’d had an extra cup and some time I would have split it and drank half sans any additions to get the full experience. It makes me a little sad that I couldn’t. Well, it’s something else to look forward to now.
In the meantime, here is what I got out of it:
It was a nice malty, round cup which to me, tasted slightly toasted. Something about it with the milk reminds me of marshmallows. The astringency level was great, very mild yet it left somewhat of a pleasant aftertaste.
Overall, I found it to be rather plain. I wish that the flavours had been bolder and more complex (except the astringency, again, that part was perfect) but I still enjoyed it.
Being new at this, I’d like to come back and try it again in a few months after I’ve learned to identify some more of the notes. I hope I can tell the difference between Budla and the next black tea I try :)
With milk and sugar, this one reminds me of strawberries and cream!
bah, cherries, strawberries, it’s so hard to tell the difference in teas but they are sooo delish :)
