I’m not a fan of mate. It’s too far off the beaten track of my usual love of floral and fruity teas.

I had run out of my delicious Coffee Pu’erh by David’s Tea when I found this Chocolate Energy Tea by Bulk Barn, and thought that it might be somewhat of a replacement. The price was definitely something that piqued my interest, at $2.25 per 100g. I also find that mate tastes relatively like bitter coffee on its own.

There was a very mild hint of chocolate when the tea was hot, but nothing but blah after that. It was okay for a good morning energy boost. As it cooled, it reminded me of black tea with a coffee aftertaste.

I might buy it again if I’m craving a coffee fix.

What can you expect from Bulk Barn? Well, not too much. Their tea is stored in large open containers that are constantly being exposed to light.

Storage aside, who can resist spending a little over $2.00 for 100g of tea? They have everyone beat in the price category. They also have a decent selection of teas.

As for the tea itself, the flavour is okay. It’s sharp and uneventful. It’s a big step above tea bags. It’s good for my morning commute when I need something fast and caffeinated. This is one tea I’d prefer with milk and sugar.

My foray into steeping happened with tin of Oreo cookie and salted chocolate caramel tea, back in college in 2009. I probably bought them for the novelty more than the taste— which sounds like a reason for many of my college-era purchases. The lovely little tea store was bought out by David’s Tea soon after I finished college. While I do enjoy getting tea from places other than malls, it’s difficult to find quality without going online. Most of my stash ends up being from there due to convenience.

I’m an early childhood educator. Tea is a big part of my daily life. I’ve yet to find anything as soothing and as energizing as it.

I’m on a big kick of blacks and herbals, especially straight ones.

90-100: Must get more of this. One sample isn’t enough.
80-89: Great! Would drink it again sometime
60-79: Decent, but probably won’t go back for more
40-59: Glad I tried, but one cup is enough
~40: No thanks. Never again!
